Confirmed the day visit availability with Jungle Lodges and Resorts and booked. This is our second JLR place with team. Earlier to Bheemeshwari which had a very good experience with them there was no second taught to think about JLR. 

As planned left Bangalore by 3.45 the last pickup  and reached Hunsur via Mysore by 6.30 AM.  As per the plan to Irpu falls, shocked to see the sign board stating still 78 kms via Nagarahole at Hunsur. Board sign showing left side to JLR Kabini and straight to JLR Dubare 61 Km.  So falls plan was dropped and proceed towards Bayalukuppe. We had a very nice breakfast at Nehru Café at Hunsur.

Spent an hour at Bayalukuppe  Tibetian settlement which houses a Buddhist montisary an golden temple. Very well maintained by them and a calm place to meditate inside the hall.  Its a worth place to visit and experience their  from nearby.

It was already past 9 and I had recived the call from Jungle Lodges and Resorts and enquired where we were.  Because by 9 we should  be in JLR to complete the day activities. 

Finally a 45 minutes drive from Bayalukuppe via Kushalnagar reaced the JLR Dubare. The beauty of the place is you have to cross the Cauvery river to go JLR. A shuttle boat will ply regularly to pickup the guests.

As soon we enter the JLR they introduced Mr. Nagendra Naturalist as our coordinator for the day.  He informed before 9 we should be here to see the elephants bathing.  To our luck in the misty morning 3 elephants were late to have the bath and we were lucky enough to touch, bath the elephants. It’s a wonderful experience because hearing the elephant name itself one will become nervous but in Dubare it’s another face. You are free to interact with these trained elephants to touch and see there activity from the very near distance.  Children’s are most benefited from this as they will enjoy and get out of fearless seeing this giant animal. There are around 30 + elephants in this camp.

  The day Intenary at Jungle Lodges and Resorts – Dubare.

• Elephant bathing at Cauvery river and you can touch and feel the elephants.

• Intraction with elephants.  Naturalist will explain the elephants of Dubare, there beheviour and nature.  Feeding to elephants  and food preparation to elephants can be see here.
• Elephant Ride.
• Tea break and small rest
• Naturalist will take a nature walk inside the forest.
• Lunch and rest
• Coracle ride in Cauvery rivrer
• Tea and disperse.

After the elephant bath we are taken to feeding area and Nagendra explained briefly about the Dubare Elephant camp, there behavior and nature, Found few elephants in the feeding area and many already onto work. A herd of elephants with calf seen bringing the wooden logs holding in its trunk to there kitchen. We had a brief photo session with elephants.

Then we had an elephant ride and I felt very sorry for having a ride on elephant. Some where I feel it’s also a human cruelty on animals. This ride to be restricted to children’s below 10 only. Seeing the elephant in its natural habitat and in camps there are lots of difference.  The long hobbles around the legs, bodies, mahout sitting on it, controlling the elephant by hook…  Very sorry.

Then we had a tea in dining hall. And left  for nature walk inside the forest. Just in the morning an Tiger had passed on that track. We saw the pug marks of Tiger. On the whole trail Nagendra explained about the Plants. Trees, Wasp nests, Ant hills, birds, insects. Snakes etc.,  

He has a very good knowledge on the nature.  We had a good walk and took a group shot on the banks of Cauvery. At this time a big Rat snake passed inside the river.  Also we saw an elephant  enjoying its freedom.  By the end of trial belly’s already demanding the refill.

 Dining hall interior is very beautiful. It had a malnd famous ‘Thotti Mane’ kind look.  Rain water flows from all the four side of the roof and falls in the center. That’s why called ‘Thotti Mane”. For heating the food they burn the charcoal inside the cement channels on top steel grills. This gives a continues heat and mad food more tasty. And food is awesome.  I thanked the cook Gopi for the delicious food.

Finally the day came to end and last program Coracle Ride. 

Two batches they took the ride. Then the same boat took to another bank  and say adieu  to Dubare.  We spend some time in the river and left forBangalore. On the way we had dinner and reachedBangaloreby 11.30 PM.

 How to reach Dubare JLR.

 Bangalore  to Mysore 150 km (By pass ) –  keep straight on Madakeri (coorg) SH 88  Road – Pass  Hunsur – > Periyapattna  – Kushala Nagar – towards Madakeri  after Kushalanagar some 6 kms after Kaveri Nisarga Dhama  take left deviation 10 kms to reach Dubare.  Total around 265 KM from Bangalore.

Wide Angle, a group of professional photographers and amateurs, recently conducted “Portraits of India”, a competition for its members. From the thousands of entries, 100 photographs have been picked out by a jury of experts, and these are to be displayed for an exhibition. It will be open to the public from November 28 to December 4 at Lalit Kala Academy, Greams Road, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For me its a memorable moment in my life on 28th November 2011 evening at Lalitha Kala Acadamy at Chennai. The much awaited exhibition was open to public by Ace Cinematographer Mr. Arvind Krishna and Chief Guest Stills Ravi.

My sincere thanks for all the jury’s and WA team behind this successful event and there by providing an opportunity the budding photographers to display there works. Here is the two photos of myself and overview of  inauguration.

 From this point onwards till 12.45 we have took the photos of Sculptures, walls. Pillers, long corridors, what else not. Each other discussed about how to take better shots, how did u took this ?, How to adjust my settings on camera, What are these modes on my camera, which lens,  pros and cons, etc..  Many of them are first comers with WA and   few first take.  That’s what is needed Sharing and learning together, Spend few hrs with new friends, Enjoy the day and hang to your work next day.

About Lepakshi Temple (From Different Sources)

This temple dates back to the 16th century AD, a wonderful example of the Vijayanagara  Architectural style and art and a master piece of art work done by the Vishwakarma Brahmin Stapathis who sculpted this temple. This was built in the 16th century and sits on a mount. The presiding deity is Veerabhadra.  In the exquisite shrine is a wealth of magnificent sculpture in the intricate mandapams. One mandapam has pillars with life-sized images of dancers, musicians and other sculptures, created by the artisans of the Vijayanagar Empire. The huge granite Nandi Bull is carved out of a single stone. The ceilings have breathtakingly beautiful mural paintings

The temple is divided into three parts – the ‘Mukha Mandapa’, (also called ‘Nitya Mandapa’ or ‘Ranga Mandapa’), the ‘Artha Mandapa’ and ‘Garbha Griha’, and the ‘Kalyana Mandapa’, with 38 carved monolithic pillars in grey sandstone is unfinished. These three form a triangle with a common Mandapam.

The Lepakshi Virabhadra Temple is known for the carved pillars and sculptures that are visible once you pass through the main entrance.   Among the more notable sculptures are:

The Natyamandapa, or Dance Hall, is supported by 100 pillars finely sculpted with figurines of a dancing Siva, Nandi, Tumbura, Rambha and other celestial beings playing the drum, veena and other instruments

Kalyana Mandapam (Marriage Hall):

The Kalyana Manadapam is without a roof as its construction was left unfinished.  According to mythology the marriage between Lord Shiva and Parvathy is supposed to have happened here. 

The 38 pillars of the wedding hall have images of Lord Shiva and Parvathi along with sculptures of dikapalakas, sages, deities, and guardians.

The imposing Seven headed monolithic Naga (Serpent God) sheltering a Shiva lingam.  The legend is that this sculpture was created by workers over time while they were waiting for their lunch to be

prepared and served.

The central mandapam has a dome that rises 21 feet.  The inside ceiling of this huge mandapa is divided into different panels by beams that are painted with some of the most exquisite murals of South India – some of them echo the murals found at Ajanta Caves – but the style of painting is unique and has come to be known as Lepakshi Paintings. 

Lepakshi Paintings:

Much of the glory of Lepakshi lies in the amazing frescoes on the ceilings of the Virabhadra Temple.  These painitngs are characterised by elegant linework set against the trademark orange-red background.  What makes the paintings striking are the beautiful costumes, detailed hairstyles, jewellry and textile patterns. The figures are shown in profile with prominent eyes and sharp facial features.   Given the use of vegetable dye paints, the range of colours are limited to white, green, black, and several shades of golden yellow and brown.

The paintings include a series of episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics as well as the Puranas.  Examples include:

Parvati and Maid: This painting shows Parvati with her maids getting ready for  her wedding. 

Boar Hunt: The painting shows a wild boar charging at Arjuna and Lord Shiva as they are preparing to shoot him with thier arrows.

Dakshinamurthi: Dakshinamurthi (or Lord Shiva as a Mendicant) is shown seated on a hill sharing his philosophies to sages who have gathered at his feet. 

Marriage of Shiva and Parvati: Arguably the most spectacular of the paintings at Lepakshi, shows the wedding of the two gods in progress with beautiful detail on costumes, jewellery and guests

We windup from Lepakshi after visiting the Big Bull statue which is half km away from temple. Nandi facing towards Serpent head shivalinga at Veerabhadra temple.

Left by 12.45 and planned to visit Veerapuram on the way which has a small lake  houses migratory  birds. Local say  no use as there are no birds. We dropped the idea and straight  headed to hotel for lunch. Went to Nandini Family Restaurant next to Kamath and had  belly full of full meals.  From here all said good bye for now till next walk.

Kamat Upachar: 10Kms after Chikballapur ( Bangalore-Lepakshi direction) is a well known highway chain of restaurants, known for South Indian Veg food. Its coupled with BP petrol station

Nandini Family Restaurant   : Next to Kamath and good Andra  food (both Veg and Non veg).  Worth for money, people friendly atmosphere.

How to  reach  ?

–> Bangalore – Yelahanka – Devanahalli – Chikaballapur – Bagepalli – Lepakshi.

Keep straight NH 7  no deviations all the towns are by passed.  After Bagepalli Toll pass further 500mts and take left deviation @ KADIKONDA check post to reach Lepakshi (17Kms)

 The first expedition of the Bangalore chapter – Wide Angle was planned and executed by Keshav and the subject was   ‘Avenue Road Street Photography’ . We  got a very good response on Face Book. 75 confirmed the participation and finally 25 turned up.

We are the photgraphy enthusiastic friends formed a group called ‘WIDE ANGLE’ in Face book. Leading by seniors and most experienced photographers in all subjects . Please join and learn together.

For me it’s a first kind of photo expedition in street.  I enjoyed a lot and different new experience, new friends.  By 7 am all gathered and introduced themselves. Deepak, Vijay who had experience in Street Photography given the hints, do’s and don’ts. Keshav lead the team.  Quickly after the start all became friendly started exchanging the information, getting know the new features in there camera, sharing the picture details…wow that’s great kick start.

 So many subjects, portraits, stills, action, religion procession, mass prayer, stint smell of garbage, pot hole roads, People opening there shops, shuttered shops, Hot dosa, Hot tea / coffee, lazy dogs, paper boys, flower vendors, Book seller, Vegetable vendor, people reading the news paper …no end.

 This walk we met a unique elderly person who was selling news paper. A bunch of papers and a cigarette in one hand. Deeply once taking the puff and closing his eyes thinking deeply.  Few of us interacted with him and came to know his name is Hari Bhat    aged 81 and an retired civil engineer who was involved in the construction of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. Basically from Kerala and settled here. He spokes seven languages fluently and we have to learn a lot by seeing them. (Inputs from WA members)

 As for Avenue road concerned its one of the very very oldest road inBangalore. Today many of its old heritage buildings are face shifted but still we can found old temples. Buildings and markets.  The road starts from Krishna Rajendra Market popularly known as KR Market till Mysore Bank theKG Road. The early morning will be heavily crowded till 7.30 with flower vendors on the road. Vegetable, fruit vendors inside the market. Cross, jump, push them all and enter the avenue road. On the road side u can see the fruit and other small floating vendors, Cloth merchants, so on. Till the first circle either road side you can find stationary shops, jewelry shops and few grain shops and Raja Market. Next starts cloth retail and wholesale shops. Next Further till the end of KG road book stalls. Big book distributors, small shops and road side footpath sellers can be found. You can see many of these tiny shops are second hand book sellers; they both buy from you and sell. Any course, college, entrance exam, competitive exams, Govt exams no end at all. All books are available.

 The Avenue road is fully busy all the 365 days. Festival season it will be colorful. Shopping in this road fits to every one pocket. Such a busy busty road visit before 8am it’s a different world. Wide anglers wandered   all the corners and took exceptional live life of early morning. Here is my few cents.

Forecast of rainy weather truned slowly a sunny weather and birders were on time near the Bannerghatta – Kaggalipura road first lake. Its again a monthly meet with regular birders who beacame friends now and thanks to FB which intracts every day via web media.

Parked the vehicles on the lake bed and slowly started walking on the Kaggalipura Road. This is my second expedition on this stretch. We have earlier visited during the HSBC bird race.  The birds were found plenty on this road. We need to open our eyes and ears wide to see them. Lots of vehicle movement in this forest stretch causes disturbance and add pollution.  Till the time we reached the first forest gate had observed many birds. 

As the time keep mooving fast I decided to move on with all till the trail end.  At the Bhootna Halli small lake we were able to spot the Baya weaver bird nests and plenty of Baya birds busy in buidlig the nests. They flew away and b ring the nesting material in there beak, started weaving the nests and repeatedly do the same. Its a wonder these small birds give so much impartence to there houses and build perfectly and looks vey lovely. Lake was full with lilly flowers and local boys pluck them and sell on the road side.  No other way some way they need to earn.

Tea shop next to temple was ready to serve the hot tea with biscuts.

At this point Jayaram told we can reach the entrance gate through shortcut via Suvarnamukhi. From here onwards birders started walking inside the forest path after crossing the gate. On the small hill we observed at the other end, I think may be safari route.  Few Deers, Sambar, and a Gour were happly gracing. Camera lens was not that much reachable and coudnt get the good picture.

At Suvarnamukhi there is an ancient temple and this is the birth place of Suvarnamukhi river. Sri Ambha Bhavani and Bhavni Shankara temple is there.  On the  banks of Kalyani Hanuman statue is there and its belived to be very powerful.  Sunday mobile bhajji  shop was just started , we  told them to prepare the bhajji and  relaxed on  the rock. Empty bellys emptyed the hot hot bhajji in few minutes and our walk continued.

Bannerghatta – Suvarnamukhi Bird walk June2011

From Suvarnamukhi  road leads to Champaka Dhama Swmay temple on the hillock.  On the way we saw the baby babler sitting alone in bush.  Later we took the devation where  the elephant area waring board found. At the end of the road forest gaurd room found abonded and the gate closed.  Exit via side gate and bird trails ends. Waiting for next  month another expedition. Wild Life tourism has spread every nook and corner of this tiny town, Both Government and many private lodges had setup and tourists come here never tought of importance of nature andwild life  habibits, They drink, dance and leave tons together of toxic waste inside the forest.  Please dont go all the way to  spoil the nature.  Apart from this here in Dandeli the local  youngsters had form a group and running a beutiful Home Stays in there farm lands. Will publish in separate article.

Horn Bills are the big birds which are listed in world endangerd species. To ensure conservation of the rare ‘Hornbills,’ and educate people about it, the State Forest Department along with the  Karnataka State Tourism Department have embarked upon a programme called ‘Hornbill trail’ in Dandeli town.  Four species of Horn Bill can be found here throughout the year as they made Dandeli as there home town.

   Previous night the place where we stayed I was capturing a Spider and that time I intracted with a person Miland who explained about that spider and while talking told morning we are visiting Dandeli to see Hornbills. At that time I never know  about  the geography of this timber depot.  I taught that  Timber depo means a small area with few trees and easily find the birds.  He told to contact him in the morning. He also runs a beautiful small home stay and conducts  bird trail and other activities. I would like to meet him again as his knowledge on wildlife, birds are awesome.  And a worth vist  as I got a good friend.  Morning  we reached his home and he took us to Timber depot from backside entrance and shocked to see that place. A beautiful small forest area.  Milind showed me the path and explained how to go around the depot and back. Thanks Miland for your help.  He showed me the Racket tailed Drongo on the tree. 

Along with my brother we started the trail showed by Miland and watched many birds flying actively. But my eyes were searching  for Horn Bills.  In search of them we missed the path and claimbed the small hill and there was A  wonder. An grey hornbill passed and  we followed. Found they were sitting far away and we almost deviated from the original path.  After observing these birds taking the snaps and finally we were back on  trail path which was indicating 2 kms.  On the move along trial path I found on a tree Great Indian Hornbill or Great Pied Hornbill. The gigantic bird lovely to see and sad to know that people kill them for meat and ornaments. I watched untill it flew away and its another wonder is its wing beat which  can be here far away when it fly.

Other than birds the common sighting here is Malbar Gaint Squirrel. Its swift action of jumping trees to trees is a wonder.

Dandeli Hornbills and Birds World

 Not able to be there on time and missed many early morning birds. By the time i reached the lake all birders are started exploring the half dried tank. Its a very big lake but without much water and careless of people water has polluted and surronding are a garbage dump. 

As we walk inside the lake started observing many birds and deeper into the lake more and more birds.  We came out of the lake and started walking on the tank bund along the busy road observing the wings creature. On the other side of the lake little agricultural land still exists with a farm house. On a coconut tree observed the Myna and Parakeet nests on the same tree. Parakeet found chasing away the myna when it came near the nest. Probably parakeet has been nested and surveillance was strictly enforced by parakeet .

April 3rd SundayBirding_Anekal-Doddakere

As the Sun beacame razor sharp, belly started crying. Drove the two wheeler to Jigani bypass hotel for breakfast.  Later  I travelled a short distance of 5 kms  towards shivanahalli.  Observed  new bird “White Browed Bulbul’ on the bush.  With this another bird watch came to end and looking ahead for a pleasent long week end…journy planned..will update in the next post..

The first  on field experiment I scheduled on last Sunday and the place chosen was Vally School on Kanakapura Road.  The place which has been described as  birds paradise.  And many of my fellow birders have observed  variety of species around the school.  By the time we reached  the Vally School, in the  Bird Watch register 1o members already signed there.  To my  disappoint  school security persons told to have the bird watch outside the school and not inside.   Later  I got relief after clarifying with our birder group friend.

A  long walk along the school fencing. Only birds kingdom, there noisy chirping, Busy flying, happily relaxing on trees, electric wires. We can find two big banyan Trees.  and a dry land on the other side. At the end of the Banyan tree we should have continued our trial  on the left side where the lush green area with thick bushes and trees  are there. We found the plenty of Cattle Egrets stepping with a cow heard and start observing them and moved in opposite dry land direction.  I think here i missed the route.

Under the banyan tree you can relax on the stone bench.  Ideal place away from pollution and noise. I will visit once again soon to study the birds here.   Birds found and observed

Last Sunday, our regular and popular 3^rd Sunday birding around the Bannerghatta  with BNG birders group.  This month it was HULIMANGALA VILLAGE.  The villages on the Begur – Koppa Road are in amidst concrete jungle and still have a beauty. For birders they didn’t disappoint.  Let’s all together preserve this or another lake will be vanishing soon.

Early morning I was all get set for birding; my brother called and told he will join.  Journey started 30mins delay. I had downloaded the Google road map to reach the Hulimangala village. If you see in Google map the whole area is occupied by big concrete buildings, all IT companies and some where a dot these villages.  After taking left turn in Bannerghatta village towards Kamannahalli my eyes started searching while driving. It didn’t disappoint. First bird on the way found Greater Coucal on the compound. Further a White-throated Kingfisher and Pied Bush chat on electric wire.  With the help of Google map I had reached almost 95%,  Instead of taking left passed further and stopped at the cross road. Some one guided to go back and take the right turn.  Roads are newly laid, probably an eye wash as road helps a lot for construction vehicles plying from city till Anekal.

At last we reached the Govt, Primary school HMGLA.  By this time our fellow birders are in full swing watching and observing the bird calls near Eucalyptus and Mango tree area. After this we went to lake area and the real bird hunt was started.  Quite a normal size lake polluted low level water and full of weeds. People were having bath and even they are bathing the sheep’s also.  We had sighted the Pied Cuckoo which is a winter migrant, sitting inside the weeds and partial visible. All wants to know which bird its. As only part of the body and tail were visible. Later some time it decided to give pose to all and sat for few minutes on a small branch on the open area.  Next turn was Pied King fisher which was hovering in the sky watching the fish movement and had a single dive and catch the fish.

March2011 3rd Sunday Bird Watch – HULIMANGALA

I was planned to attend the World Sparrow Day function at Wipro, suddenly I changed my mind to extend my bird watch with long drive.

JIGANI – HAROHALLI ROAD – BANGALORE

Took the Koppa Gate road and stopped for break at Nandanavana Layout.  Further down the lane crossing the layouts hit the Jigani – Harohalli Road.   The road along the Bannerghatta forest border is enjoyable.  And birding didn’t disappoint us on this stretch of 30 + Kms.  On the Jaipura doddi forest entrance found fire along the stream. Not sure weather its human or accident.  Without caring the flames Black drongo’s happily chatting on the branches.

Further down  found the Oriental Magpie Robin, laughing dove, Green Bee eaters, Bush chat, sun birds, Paddy Field pipit, Indian roller our state bird, Barn Swallows, parakeets, Indian Pond heron, Mynas. Black-shouldered Kite, Black kite, Brahminy kites.

At Tattekere we went inside the forest towards the lake. We were afraid as no one was there and the area porn to elephants.  Inside the jungle there is Kanive Mahadeshwara Temple.  After seeing the people there got little relief.  We were welcomed by group of monkeys near lake.  Couldn’t find birds in that afternoon and lonely cormorant sitting in island.  By this time the beat forest guard objected for taking the photographs. I told him we are bird watchers.   A nice place inside the forest and one of the main water hole for Bannerghatta range elephants.

Time was running fast and it’s already past 12. Decided to reach Harohalli and return to Bangalore.  On the road side I observed the Indian Roller sitting on electric cable. Stopped and started clicking, it flew away. I saw it went and sat on a bald coconut tree. When observed that tree there were many holes.  Parked vehicle side by and entered the coconut farm and observed.  Indian roller came back with prey in its beak, went inside, popped its head and flew away. At that time from the second hole a Rose ringed parakeet popped its head. This tree looked liked an apartment, Top hole occupied by Indian Roller and Second by Rose Ringed Parakeet and third unknown or vacant!

From Harohalli to Bangalore we can see few lakes, Kaggala Halli, Lake, and Somanahalli Lake, few others village names not noted. On the Kanakapura road again on a mango tree observed a parakeet went inside the hole. Waited for some time to come out.  How these birds go inside these small holes. There flexibility is really amazing.

As all the Sunday outing this week also it’s worth visit and a weekend relax with long drive which I love always.

It was very interesting and a positive mood that little children’s were so much actively involved to know and understand about the birds.  And with MBK bird watch becomes open school. He makes everyone think and explains in the way that every one understands. This time he had put question to Photographers also!   Observation on birds sitting. Are big bird sits on big tree and Small birds on branches only??  and  which birds walk and hops ?? (Correct me if I am wrong) . It may look simple but everyone has to think deep, how much we observe Birds, Animals behaviors, changes, there calls, pattern of nests and which trees, flower they often visit or reside. There is no end if we go deep in observing. We saw them and keep on clicking, especially for me MBK question made me to think in different angle and I will practice it.

Lalbagh is the heaven for birds and university for bird watchers.  It was a good count of people and children’s came for bird watch.  Here are my few clicks from bird watch.

LAL BAGH – Feb,2011-2nd Sunday Birding

Previous day we all met in Jayanagar Hotel sipping a hot coffee and discussed the plan.  Decided to meet at Jayadeva Flyover by 5.30 AM.  Morning we started our day 6am   towards Bannerghatta. First visited the Zoo area behind the Bannerghatta Busstand. Early morning  birds have just started there day and we had the count in. Climb the small hill , there were lots of Bul Buls preaching  on trees. We suggested by a local that there is a big banyan tree and may birds can found. We step towards searching that tree and found a gigantic Banyan Tree.  Only we could here the birds preach and Tiger roar from the near by veterinary hospital of zoo. In this tree we found  the Spotted Owlet and other birds.  Later we had visited Beegi Halli Lake. There we found many Darters, Ducks, and an Pied Kingfisher, Brahmhy Kite.. Next we started our last route for birding, Bannerghatta – Kaggalipura road 23 Kms.  On the road we found many birds, one of the water body was a CRPF camp and not allowed. On the road there was a small fruit tree and found may Barebets preeching and Golden orientel eye also.  On the road many Black kites found flying.  We reached the Kanakapura road and decided to reach back to BG Road via NICE to avoid the city traffic.  At this time we were very hungry and went to Arakere Adigas hotel for Lunch.  later  last place of our day Madivala tank. An big lake inside the city with drainage water. Very sad to see such a big lake with polluted water. Its a house for many water and migratory birds. We could saw only few  Pelicans and other than Cattle Egret, purple swamp hen, Grey heron, etc..at end our count for the day was 64 bird species. Finally grand ceremony at Hotel orchid Manipal center and dinner.  Finally the great bird race 2011 came to end.

Past two months 3rd Sunday birding I couldn’t make up. This month Nature walk and Birding scheduled at Jigani Lake. Its a very big tank and as usual of other lakes its also sinking slowly. Around the lake one can see the garbage dumping and steady growth of urbanization. This will slowly swallow the lake.

When I left in the early   morning 30km ride become very challenging  to me due to cold wind. Unable to bear the cold raised the throttle but road didn’t allow to take control until reaches the Bannerghatta circle. Later managed to reach Jigani by 6.30 am.  I passed the lake and road got confused and called Mahesh, he told to come back to Jigani bus stand to have a tea and proceed. When sun raised slowly people gathered at Tea shop. Had a hot tea which gives a little energy and body got warm up. It was good crowd today.

Subbu sir explained the evolution of water bodies and there needs, how different types of birds spread across the lake  and what caused birds disappearance from lakes today around city. 

Then we went around the tank, found various birds,  learnt few things, totally enjoyed the day.

All these days outing was to be the cross country paricipation and this time its Cross Nation participation.  Paul and his family participated in Birding. Paul was very friendly and he had very good words on INDIA and places.  Thanks for the organisars for arranging this beautiful trip.

Sept3rd Sunday Birding @ Jaipura Doddi

This is a beautiful greeny village, surrounded by BG Forest and prone to Elephants.  Hence dont venture this area without a forest gaurd.

The meeting place decided was  NICE Road Junction Kengeri on Mysore road. Morning picked up Dhaval from Banashankari and proceed on Kanakapura road – Entered NICE Road. Pay the tool  and my Access125 Picked up on the nice  NICE road at 80kmph.  At Mysore road exit Lohit and his cousin were waiting for us. I got a new photo partner Supreeth who is also very interesting in photography.  A small introduction, photo session, get ready – steady – start.

Our first halt at Hanuman Temple near Ramanagra.  Then here onwards vehicles got  speedup till Maddur.  We planned to have a breakfast at Vasudev Adigas but being Saturday  or whole Bangalore was already settled there. We couldn’t wait for such long time. At the Maddur entry Honda halted by puncture. Fortunately or dramatically it happened in-front of Puncture  shop !!.  Puncherwala punctured Lohiths pocket by changing  tube with high price. No other go on Highways.

At Maddur – Kollegala  junction we entered  the Maddur famous Benne Dosa Hotel. Its a small road side hotel with the fame of few Kannada actors tasted here.  Sri Chowdeshwari Phalahara Mandira,  Morning crowd was already waiting for there turn at outside.  Hot dosa was serving  inside and no one was in mood to get out of there. After 30 mins of wait our turn came and had belly full of dosa. What a taste. Dont miss when u travell on Mysore Highway.,

Until here our ride was smooth on Mysore double road highway. Now  @ maddur take deviation to left towards MM Hills Road.  Once you enter the MM Hills road u need to negotiate with road pits and humps. Literally there is no road at all.  Night ride for two wheelers on this road is very difficult.  Now we are in the mid of villages .  Enjoying the nature beauty,  Paddy fields, Sugar Cane crops beside the roads, lakes, Coconut plantations…wow really wonderful. Need this type of break at-least once in a month.,

By the time we passed the Malavalli town and ahead to SS. On the road i stopped  nearby stream sawing the Baya Weaver Bird nests on the tree. Its always amazing to know how these little birds build the nests  perfectly.  What a architect by little Baya Weaver Birds. In city you cannot find these birds and there nests.  They were very active  in constructing there houses. I waited for some time and able to capture there activities.

By 11.15 we reached the main point. First visited GaganaChukki Falls. On the main road take left turn, Big arch of SHIVA HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT welcomes you. Travel next 5kms crossing hydro electric project, quarters, Banyan tree and pay the tool for parking (even though no one cares for your vehicle). Only one police PC is available. At the end of that road you will land-up in front of the gigantic GAGANA CHUKKI FALLS. This side is called the Guest house point view.

From here we left to Bhara Chukki Falls another branch of Cauvery River  which is 10 kms from here. Before that we wanted to have some time in water and needed a peaceful place.  And On the way to Bhara Chukki Falls take a left turn and there is a Darga where we can have  another view of Gagana Chukki Falls.   On the way to BC falls which falls in ChamarajaNagar dist Big bridge welcomes you. At the end of the bridge you will see the National High way. Take left and little further left again. Don’t get confuse at this junction.  The bridge view is very beautiful and there are many water birds found. This bridge has a warning board stating Bridge is weak Go slow. What a shame. The modern India architects-Bureaucratic-Politicians least bothered about  public life and Public money. Crossing this bridge and when u take U turn on the next junction towards Bhara chukki Falls there is another same story of modern bridge and age old STONE BRIDGE still shinning. Hats off to Royal Architects of pre Independence.

Next visited Shivana Samudra village. It has two beautiful things. One is the check-dam across river Cauvery and an ancient very important Srivishnava  Rang anatha Swamy temple,   At the Check Dam we have the bath and good time at water. But rain didn’t allow us to stay long time.

SHREE JAGANMOHANA RANGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE Popularly known as MADHYA RANGA. it is a practice that one  has to visit all the three Ranganatha Temples in a day. Adi Ranga @ Sriranga Patna near Mysore , Madhya Ranga @ ShivanaSamudra and Anthya Ranga @ Tiruchi Tamil nadu where the River Cauvery touches the lotus feet of  Lord Ranganatha and moves further in all the three places.

There is another ancient temple near Ranganatha swami temple is SRI PRASANNA MEENAKSHI SAMEETHA SRI SOMESHWARA TEMPLE.

Both temples are worshiped by same priest. His house is opp to lane to Ranganatha temple.  If temple is locked you can contact priest at his home.

From this village we went to view the Gagana Chukki Falls Darga View. On the same to Bhara Chukki take the left turn for Darga. Here you can climb down to falls and have a close look.

From here went to the last destination point Bhara Chukki Falls. Its around 4 to 5 kms from here. Here there is a boating facility at the bottom of the falls.  Age old  stone steps are there to reach the falls end.  You can have a beautiful view of the water falling from the heights.

At last a day long happiness came to end and time to turn our vehicles back to city. As time up couldn’t go to Talkadu.  From afternoon belly’s were @ hunger strike and desperately needed some energy.   At Malavalli had the break fast and warm up coffee at Maddur Vasudeva Adigas Hotel. Reached Bangalore by 10.30 _Pm.

From Bangalore we can find such a lot of places where one can feel he is very far away from City but very near. Bangalore is surrounded by such natural greenery, forests and rocky hills.

One of such place is Bheemeshwari. ಭೀಮೇಶ್ವರಿ

Which lies on the bank  of Cauvery just 103 kms from silicon city.  The Cauvery Wild life Sanctuary covers these areas.  The Jungle Lodges and Resorts – JLR A Government of Karnataka Undertaking runs Eco Tourism throughout Karnataka and 3 JLRs on the same Cauvery stretch. (Galibore and Doddamakali).  My experience in Bheemeshwari with JLR is excellent and affordable.  The officers and even forest guards are very co-operative and Food was very good.  We had booked  for a day visit.

Day Visit Activities @ JLR

We left city by 7am and reached by 10.30Am.  Had our  breakfast at Kanakapura. Hotel Rathna Upahar food was good and I suggest as a break point on this way.  Weather was very good in between rain drizzling, cool breeze make journey very short.  The villages , people, landscapes are very beautiful to see. But there life ??? .

OUR INDIA OUR VILLAGE

After reaching JLR first report in office. Finish all formalities and refresh, you will be welcomed with Lemon Juice.

By this time forest guard was ready to take for trekking to near by hill in the forest. Whole range is called Basavana Betta. Lush greenery, forest animals, birds, Elephants, Leopard, the endangered Malabar giant squirrel, Deer, Sambar, Peacocks etc., can be found. All this can be possible if you stay overnight and go for trekking in the early morning.

Forest guard Mutthaiah was very kind in explaining the surrounding of this forests and JLR.  By this time we had entered the forest.  Guard has stopped us by hearing some sound in the nearby bush and alerted us and took on another route to hill.  Even though it’s a small hill need little push for heavy weight souls who stick to chairs whole day!!  To reach the top.

From the top of the hill we first saw the creature that was in that bush.   That was the Elephant herd. Three were there.  If he was not alerted us we may have to face them.

From the top of watch tower we can see the  panoramic view of Cauvery Wild Sanctuary and mighty river Cauvery . Which flows in the center of the forest.  After spending some time we returned back to JLR.   First planned to go to river till lunch time, but forest guard told as the elephants are roaming there, chances of them to coming to river. Hence returned to JLR.

On the banks of river there are very beautiful log huts according to your budget.  Built in very spacious between each hut and looks very nice. Nets have been tied to trees for your refreshment. If you don’t do any activities just relax on these nets hearing the song of river and birds.

It’s the time for lunch we headed towards Golghar (Dining hall name @ JLR). We need to walk beside the river to reach there. Very big hall built in round shape.

Chiefs are busy arranging the food for visitors.  Time up  by 1.30pm the whole Golghar was flooded with the smell of delicious food.  Getting this type of food really in forest is appreciable. Here the difference makes with Government resort and private. Hats to the people behind the JLR.

Now the time for rest and you are free till 3.30 pm.  We taught of getting into the river, But the forest guard told its very dangerous as crocodiles are there in river. Showed the dangerous creature which has sleeping lazily on the rock far away.  I with my friend crossed little water and sat on the rock riverside. Cool breeze was very soothing. Lots of birds were busy fishing. Cormorants were too fast to me capture with my lens.

Game came to end. Forest guard showed the spot where we can enter the water. After having fun in water we were ready for coracle ride. Usually if water is more ride will be six kms upstream and return by jeeps. As water was not that much this time due to low rain a small round he taken. But showed the dangerous crocodile from very nearby.  As all were making noise it went inside the water.

Its time to wrap-up.  Time was past 5 pm. They served hot tea with bhajji and with that the day out came to end. The rejuvenate souls say good bye to JLR and returned to the concrete jungle for the routine job.

This time we had Sri. S Karthikeyan, Chief Naturalist , Jungle Lodges and Resorts.  Its a good learning session for me on Macros.  Hope to learn more from him in comming days.  Few members went ahead for birding and rest stood behind Kartik.  Its an wonderful experiance to see the smallest insect as gaint through his lens.   Sir profile can be seen on http://www.wildwanderer.com.

Beside all these things the another side of beauty of Bangalore if you want to see travel 30 + kms outskrits. Fresh air, Few lakes, and beautiful calm place only one relaxing and to surrender the lords feat many temples (which are having 100 years of history) around.

I am taking to one of such place A small modren para Village border to Bangalore city. Welcome to KALKUNTE AGRAHARA -Sri Ranganatha Swami Perumal Temple an 300 Year old beautiful temple. The Sri Vaishnava sect here are famous as Kalkunte Iyengars.

This temple has a Rajagopuram, Prakaram, behind there is a small stage for religious  discourse or other  functions. In the entrance either side of the wall Dashavatharam the 10 incarnations of lord Vishnu is carved beautifully.

Construction is on for a choultry. With blessing of god many children of this village had acquired good knowledge  and settled in overseas. Still their root is strong in native village. The developed village is a modern example. It is having a School, Hospital, and being on the main connecting road transport is easily accessible.

Archakar Sri. Suresh Bhattar explained the history  of the temple and the on going temple development works. In the month of Palguna annual festival of Sri Ranganathar happens here. Thousands of devotees will witness the grand festival during that time.

How to reach Kalkunte Agrahara :

Route 1: Drive straight road crossing K R puram towards Whitefiled. At the end of that road (cross Hoodi, ITPL) ‘T’ junction  ie., Hoskote road . Dont take any deviations here. Continue the driving straight you are on the Chikka Thirupati Road.  after 5 to 6 kms you will see the board to take deviation to Chikka Tiruapathi and Kalkunte Agrahara.  Take right and drive further 6 kms will reach this village.

Route 2 : On the Sarjapura Road  outer ring road cross Agara, ibbalur junction, WIPRO office and reach Sarjapura and take left turn towards Chikka Tirupathi cross CT and drive straight on the Hoskote Road will reach Kalkunte.

Our First stop at Kommaghatta village lake. Now water was draining for the renovation. There were many numbers of Little Egrets found busy catching the fish.

Spent few minutes here and continued to search the Bheemanakuppe kere. After crossing the Kommaghatta village around 2 kms in front of a farm found many parrots and Birds. But the farm gate was locked and there was no space to enter at all.

After this we took left turn deviation till Anchepalya village and inside cross the BettanaPalya and further few kilometers we were in front of the Lake.

It is very big tank and used for irrigation. We found many birds sitting on the electric cable, inside the bushes, and few roaming on the grass land.

As I am no voice on these birds just enjoyed seeing them and wherever possible photographed. The surrounding is fully greenery. At this time rain has taken break and sun shined little. Just roamed on the kere ere and further down on a tree many weaver bird nests found.

But couldn’t find a single weaver bird coming to nest. Waited for long and went walking on the irrigation tank bund down the lake till the end of paddy fields in search of birds. On the return path I found a Blue King Fisher lazily sitting on the water bed.

It was already 9.30am and started from there. At the cross road we took right turn which they told will connect to Mysore road.

For an enjoyable Rural village atmosphere with manageable Road:

Mysore Road —-after RV College take right cross the railway track reach Kengeri Satilate Town–on the main road take left, cross Kengeri railway Station further take right turn ie., Bande Mutt Road….cross Nice Road Bridge…..down the road Kommaghatta Lake and village…….travel 3kms on the same road on your left you will find a board “Padmashree Institution” take left here and cross the Sulekere village travel till Hosapalya Village. You will find a shop “Sai Ram Enterprise” and few small shops, take right turn (careful u may miss this road) road are not good. After crossing Bettanapalya village further 1 km you will reach Bheemana Kuppe Kere.

Good Road Urban Atmosphere:

On Mysore road from Kengeri 4^th Km ..Cross Raja rajeshwari Medical College….Challaghatta village down on left Jagath Pharma….Take Right turn here. Board indicating road to Shiradi Saibaba Anandmaye Temple and Manjunatha Nagar will found. (See the Photo Below). Cross the railway track travel around 3 kms—cross Surabhi Public School to reach the Hosapalya Village. Here take left and follow the above said direction.

After a small gap continued our journey crossed the Ramnagara the fame of ‘Shole’ Hindi super hit film, reached the Janapada Loka which is located between Ramanagara and Channapatna.

Shri Nage Gowda is the Founder of ‘Janapada Loka’, which is one of the wonders in the 20th century history of Karnataka. Janapada Loka established near Ramanagara on Bangalore-Mysore highway, on a sprawling 15 acres of land full of greenery, is the fruit of his hard work dedication and organizing ability and was inaugurated on 12th March 1994. It has grown into a very significant folk cultural centre in the country and is a hub of Folk cultural activities.

The imposing main entrance is the chief attraction of Janapada Loka. A majestic door adorned with Harige and Trumpets and tall brass Nandidwajas on either side of the pathway enhance the grandeur of the entrance. The design of the door is a perfect blend of the Shaiva and Vaishnava cult. The information Center sells cassettes, CDs, DVDs and books related to folk art forms and literature and a video show of documentaries and other folk art forms are screened in the Video Scope theatre in Janapada Loka. A big grinding stone, which used to be pulled by two bisons, is a fitting icon of Janapadaloka. “Lokamatha Mandira”is a museum displaying articles of daily use of folk people like cooking vessels, equipments used for farming and animal husbandry and other such rural activities. “Chithra Kuteera” which reflects different stages of the founder’s literary achievements and struggle during the building of Janapada Loka and also houses photographs of different folk art forms of Karnataka. “Loka Mahal” is a two-storied building where more than 5000 folk artefacts are aesthetically displayed.

A community house called “Doddamane” built in the traditional rural style with a central courtyard surrounded by pillars serves as a place for workshops and seminars and also provides lodging facility to visiting artists. “Shilpamaala”, a place for stone memorials, tell their own story. Aayagaarara Maala, Lokapriya MahaGanapathi temple where Lord Ganesha is ever ready to bless the visitors, a colossal open-air theatre in the Greek style with a capacity to seat 1000 people, boating facility and playground for children are the attractions at Janapada loka.

Artists who have great skill in handicrafts like pottery and wooden toys stay here and are engaged in making artefacts. After imparting training in Dollu kunitha, Kolata, Goravara kunitha and other allied arts, in-house performing troupes of Janapada Loka are formed. Bangalore University has recognized Janapada loka as a research centre. This Janapada University started in 1999 conducts Janapada Diploma and Janapada Certificate courses. Folk related development camp, folk research workshop, and seminars are held regularly in the campus. A fully equipped library has been established. Annual Festivals like Lokothsava in February – March, Kite Festival in July, Dassera Festival in October are celebrated without fail which attracts visitors from far and wide. In essence, Janapada loka is a treasure house of Folk museums and folk related activities and attract scholars, interested persons, and researchers. Janapada loka emerging as one of the best Folk cultural centers of the world is bubbling with activities throughout the year.

First visited the museum “LOKA MATHA MANDIRA” a rare collections of Karnataka rural folk’s tradition day today usage. This museum displays articles of daily use employed by rural people which includes huge storage bins for storing grains, pots and utensils used in cooking, articles made of wood and iron used in animal husbandry and agricultural implements. In general, the orderly display with proper informative labels gives a clear picture of the rural life to the spectators. We had the rare opportunity that the guide of this museum himself is a folk artist. When we requested he song a beautiful song narrated the usefulness of BAMBOO (Bideru). 

Next Visited the Loka Mahal : This museum is a spacious two-storied building. In the ground floor there are life size dolls dressed as Mudalapaya Yakshagana artists, coorg couple, Dasayya and Goravayya – village characters, pied piper, Halakki Vokaaligas- who perform dances of nomadic tribe and harvest dances. The other rarities that find a place here are various arms and weapons, the articles used in wedding ceremony, weights and measures of yester years, ritual items used while performing pooja and lastly a few items from the kitchen. The Central courtyard in the ground floor displays large wooden idols of ‘Bootha’ or Ghost worship.

The First floor exhibits a rare collection of various folk instruments and other wooden parts of chariots and stone idols. Special dolls made of hides-Togalu Gombegalu, puppets, apparels of Badagu tittu and Tenkutittu Yakshagana artists (Forms of Folk Theatre), Ganjeefa art pieces (playing cards), children’s playthings, Soma and Harige(masks) exhibited here capture the hearts and minds of the visitors.

Coming out of Lokamahal and on your right side few meters further you will find “SHILPA MALA”  (above Photo)A large collection of stones arranged in Shilpamala are not just ordinary stones of the present day but special stones dating back to a period more than one thousand two hundred years. These are all inscribed stones, which were being planted in honour of brave people for their achievements. These are identified as Veeragallu- in honour of a war hero, Satikalllu- in honour of a faithful wife and Gokallu- in honour of a beloved cow. Besides these, there are many idols of worship, which had been abandoned and lying in ruin in different parts of Karnataka. These have been collected preserved and displayed here with serenity. Behind the Shilpamala is a Temple of Ganesh-built in a typical village style.

 The whole atmosphere makes the visitors feel one with the nature around.

Come out of Shilpamala and put your legs forward enjoying the cool breeze u will stand in front of the artificial lake named as LOKA SAROVARA. One beautiful white Swan has placed here and  it roams within the corner of this lake, Retuned in the same path next to shilpa mala an wooden Chariot is placed under the shed. This is HALSASURU CHARIOT : Halasuru chariot was a part of Someshwara Temple in Bangalore , which has significant historical importance. As the chariot was slightly damaged due to a fire accident and was considered inauspicious for puja it was abandoned. The chariot thus discarded was brought here in its full form, restored and preserved for its beautiful and delicate carvings.

Further down next to Loka Mahal  we visited HERITAGE VILLAGE. Inside this we entered the first hut where two rural couples were busy making the clay pot, and articles.

 This is an open-air exhibition of/; tools of rural vocations like pottery and smithy, sugarcane juice extractor made of wood, oil extractor, Kottana- rice pounding equipment, tools used in agriculture, nets and boats used in fishery and such rural activities. The other exhibits are weapons used in hunting, a bullock cart, special cart – sarotu, a chariot and a palanquin decorated with beads. To complete the scene a model of a beautiful village house is built in Aayagararamala.  

Coming out of Aayagara Maala near maingate reenter again and u will reach OPEN AIR THEATER and PUPPET THEATER.

An impressive and big open-air theatre built in Greek style with a capacity to hold 1000 persons at a time. The theatre comes alive with programmes of Folk art forms on the last sunday of every month. Adjacent to it is a well-equipped green room. The theatre has received applause from none other than Late Sri B.V Karantha, one of the best directors of theatre arts that India has produced.

In Puppet Theater we couldn’t se the show as there was no current. They had exhibited the Dasara Dolls collection and beautifully arranged and very much impressed.

Coming out from there just passed few huts and thought they were of local residents. 

Passing by we  met the first folk artist,  who told that they are the artists who stay here and exhibits there rural art. I was about to miss this chance. We went inside and in front of the hut an old lady was decorating the entrance of the door. They were called DEEVARU Community.

  The hut also built according to there natural hut in there native.  Inside the house walls were beautifully sketched with art which were in final and draft stage, on request they gave the phose to lens.  In Bangalore an organization called Center for Revival of Indigenous Art (CFRIA) will conduct workshop on CHITTARA  ART.

About DEEVARU Community.

Chittara is an autochthonous art practice of an indigenous community called “Deevaru” residing at Sagar, Shimoga Dist, Karnataka State, INDIA. Chittara drawings are intricate patterns that represents the auspicious ceremonies and rituals of life symbolized in geometric patterns. Its is a socio cultural art practice of women passed on from generation, using eco friendly materials.

 Here we got a chance to meet Dr.Kuruva Basavaraj, Litterateur, Folklorist and curator of Janapada Loka. Actually they saw us taking the photograph of this community hence asked me about the reason to documenting.  We got very good information from them about Deevaru community and the programmes conducted in Janapada Loka regularly.  I t was our pleasure to have few minutes along with Dr.KB.

 With this our half day off the city life come to end. Yes I forgot to tell u how Janapada Loka visit ends without visiting the Kamath Loka Ruchi next to it. Had a cup of strong coffee and Bhajji and returned back by night.

With the blessings of Lord Guru Datta we have visited Ganagapura recently. We had been guided by our friend Sri Subrahmanya Bharathula of Markapur for contacting the Archaka, lodging and the perfroming the pooja. A day in Ganapur gives us some sort of relif and I cannot express in words. Such a sacred place. Performed Ekavartha Rudrabhisheka, Nirguna Paduka seva, madhukari and evening Pallakki seva.

The below information on Ganagapura is the extract of email from Sri. Subramanya Bharathula of Markapur (AP) . He is very kind and provided the valuable information on this divya kshetra.

I think, Dattaguru wants to explain the details of Ganagapur kshetra to all the members of this group. Actually, I wanted to upload it in the begining of this year 2006. But, I don’t know the reason, it kept aside. Two immediate mails were received today to know the details of Ganagapur kshetra. Pls proceed to read this information. Even by reading this information, I think, all of us get a feeling that, we are in Ganagapur kshetra. That is the greatness of Shri Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy who is the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.

TEERTHE TAYA THAYA|| YETI POONIT VAVAYA||

Generally, Saints confer holiness not only on human beings but also on the places of pilgrimmage. Then the holy places come there to become more holy and at such places, even an athiest becomes a  believer in God, the human beings can follow the path of God and perform penance. When such penance is performed at the instance of a Guru and when one follows the path of God indicated by the Guru it becomes fruitful.Man’ s mind must be oriented towards God. Then only, he can become happy. This is the experience of great sages and it is sure that one can experience such feelings at Shree Kshetra Ganagapur.

Importance of Ganagapur kshetra:

Shree kshetra Ganagapur is a holy place of Lord Dattatreya and the place is very important “Darshaneeya kshetra”.  The place is connected to Sri Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy who is the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.  The kshetra importance was explained by Shreeguru and one can be seen in “Shree Gurucharitra” . There is an assurance from Shreeguru that he would forever abide at Ganagapur and go round the village for ‘Biksha’ at noon is literally true even today. Offering “maadhukari” to the people at Ganagapur and taking biksha from atleast 5 houses is having very improtance at this holy place. Even today also, the process is continuing and the devotees are having faith the Lord Dattatreya is taking biksha everyday at Ganagapur kshetra.  Shri guru Sri Nrusimha saraswathy swamy confirmed the same and it can be seen in Gurucharitra.  At the time of Antardhan, Shreeguru said to the disciples and citizens of Ganagapur as follows.

” You need not worry. I shall stay at this Ganagapur kshetra secretly.  I shall have bath at the Bheema-Amaraja sangam river in the morning. In the mid day, I shall come to Ganagapur math and accept biksha in this village and accept your puja, devotional services in this Muth. From the view point of the public, I am going away from this place. My living presence will be experienced by any one who bathes in the Sangam and takes darshan of my padukas here. I will receive pujas at this  kshetra in the form of paudkas”. The Padukas of Shree Nrusimha saraswathy swamy at this place are “Nirguna padukas” ( the padukas are not having any shape).

Shreeguru has been blessing his devotees with his divine acts on countless occassions. The aspirations of Datta devotees who worship him at Ganagapur ksehtra with true love, faith and dedication will be fulfilled. The miraculous experineces of such will ever remian hidden in the devotees own hearts. This is true even today also and devotees are getting experiences of Lord Datta’s presenct at Ganagapur kshetra. Mentally retarded people, the people who are suffering from chronic deceases are coming to this place and getting cured from their sad feelings. The trouble of spirits and ghosts vanishes and one can get peace of mind with the darshan of Swamy padukas at this kshetra.

The temple is generally opened at 3.00 a.m. in the morning everyday and the priests are giving Kakada harathi to swamy padukasat that time.The temple is opened upto night 9.00 p.m. without any intervention.

ACCOMODATION FACILITIES:

Lodging facilities are available. It is difficult to get a room on important days like poornima etc., Some private Ashrama authorities are giving rooms on rent basis. Some priests are also providing lodging and boarding facilities on payment basis.General hotels (not luxurious) are availble for normal type food. Devasthan rooms are also available at cheaper rents.

Recommended Priest to perform Pujas/sevas in the temple:

I am recommending Shri NAGESH ACHYUTHA BHAT Pujari of the temple to perform the pujas in the temple of Ganagapur kshetra. In Ganagapur temple, the priests hawa is the final.As per my knowledge and experience, the above pujari is charging reasonable price for the seva/pujas to SHreeguru and faithfull personality. One boring pump is there in his house for identification purpose. He will arrange lunch and/or dinner in his house and he will show the proper facilities for staying purpose on rent base.

IMPORTANT DAYS TO VISIT GANAGAPUR KSHETRA:

1.Kaartheeka pournami 2. Maagha pournami 3. Sraavan pournami 4.Makara Sankranthi day 5.A combination day of Amaavaashya and Monday 6. Deevali-Naraka Chathurdashi 7. Maagha Bahula Paadyami (Swamy’s anthardhan day)                      8. Gurupoornima 9. Any poornima day

But during these days, it is very difficult to have darshan of Swamy padukas. So, it is always better to advice the devotees to visit Ganagapur in the general days to have free darshan of Lord Dattatreya.

Sangam:

Sangam is a meeting point of Bheema and Amaraja rivers. Sangam is like Prayaga. The importance of Sangam was explained by Shreeguru and it can be seen in Shreegurucharitra. Who ever takes a bath in Sangam, he will free from his sins and his wishes will be fulfilled.Bath in Sangam in Kartheeka maasa, Maagha maasa, Makara sankranthi, poornima and Amaavashya days.Before and after Grahana period is very virtuous.

Puranich history of Sangam: There is a puranic history that Jallundhara Rakshasas were on war. Indra went to Shri Shankara and said “we kill Rakshasaas, but from each drop of their blood, new Rakshasaas are born  and they have spread in three lokas. They have kelled many Gods”. By hearing this Shri Shankara was started to kill the Rakshasaas in the form of Rudra.  Indra said ‘you will kill the Rakshasaas, but please suggest any device to make the Gods alive’. Then Shri Shankara recited Amritha mantra and gave a jar filled with nectar. Indra sprinkled the nector onthe Gods and made them alive. While Indra was going with the jar of the remaining nectar, some drops fell on the earth and a river was created called “AMARAJA”. Taking bath in this river prevents deceases and untimely death. This river meets Bheema river and the point is known as Sangam. Hence, Sangam place is a virtuous place and adviced the devotees to take bath in the Sangam without fail.

OUDUMBAR TREE: The Oudumbar tree is situated at the place nearer to Sangam.  After having bath in Sangam  a mug/pot/bottle of Sangam water has to be takne and it should be poured a the root of famous Oudumbar tree. Do the pradakshina with a minimum of 11/21/108 rounds to the tree by chanting Datta nama ‘DIGAMBARA DIGAMBARA SHREE PAADA VALLABHA DIGAMBARA”. Somany Sadhus/devotees are continuously doing Shreegurucharitra payara int he presence of the tree. One who perform Gurucharitra parayan with sapthaha deeksha at the premises of this oudumbar tree, he will definitely have the darshan of Lord Dattatreya in any form and their desires will be fulfilled. It is really true and even for today also.

History of Oudumbar tree at Ganagapur kshetra: Leprosy decease of a brahmin by name Narahari was cured by Shree guru Nrusimha saraswathy swamy and the story can also seen in Shreegurucharitra. Narahari bowed to Shreeguru and began to pray him at that time. The 8 sloka stotra comosed by Narahari was become famous and are being reciting in the temple at night even today also. Each sloka ends with “VANDAYAAMI NAARASIMHA SARASWATHEESHA PAAHIMAAM”. The stotra is now familiar as Nrusimha saraswathy ashtaka. Shreeguru blessed Narahari and siad, whoever recite the sloka every day with full devotion, they will get ashta aishwarya, spiritual power, wealth, fame and noble offspring.

Ashwatha vriksha:

Ashwatha vriksha is nearer to Sangam and is very nearer to Oudumbar tree. Shree guru performed his daily anushtan under this tree. The importance of this Vriksha can also seen in Shreegurucharitra. The regular SEJA HARATHI at 8.00 p.m. at this anushtan place is very powerful. Paduka darshan at this place is opened from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 pm only. In other timings upto night 9.00 pm, we can see the Swamy rupa with alankara. This tree is like Kalpavriksha and is adviced to perform pradakshina to this vriksha, it will grant boons to such devotees.

Sangameshwaralay:

After worshipping Oudumbar and Ashwatha trees, worship Sangameshwara in the Sangameshwaralaya temple with devotion. This Shivalinga is like Mallikarjuna of Srisaila. Bow to Nandi and Chandi and have 3 rounds like round from Nandi to Chandi and Chandi to Nandi back and have darshan of Lord Shankara.

Ash Hill:

Ash hill is nearer to Sangam and it is said that there was a hill from which Ash came from the days of Lord Parashurama. Lord Parashurama performed penance at this place. The ash is very powerful and now it is in the form of Mud only. The wearing of ash by mixing with oodi is very powerful and it will protect those persons  from DRISHTI doshas. It will protect the children for Baalarishta and Graha dosha. If the ash is applied slightly everyday on the stomach part of pregnant ladies, then they will deliver a healthy child with some “Tejarupa”. Several experiences were also observed with this application of the Ash on pregnant ladies.

Kalleshwar temple:

Kalleshwaralaya is nearer to Manmadha theertha i.e., one of the Ashta theerthas and is nearly 1 km from Swamy mutt. Auto and Taanga conveyance is there for Kalleshwar temple. The importance of Kalleshwar temple was also explained in Shree gurucharitra. Kalleshwara is like Gokarna Mahabaleshwara. By performing Abhisheka in the month of Kartheeka, Maagha and Sravana to Kalleshwara, one’s wishes will be fulfilled. The assurance was given by Shreeguru.

Chinthamani Ganapathi:

The idol of Chinthamani Ganapathy can be seen in the inner side of Swamy Mutt. The devotees who are visiting the Ganagapur kshetra are not aware of this Ganapathi. Shree guru given instructions to the disciples to have the darshan of this Ganapathi in Ganagapur.

Ashta Terthas:

1.Nrusimha teertha2.Sreepaada theertha,3.Rudrapad a theertha 4. Chakra theertha 5. Paapa nashaka teertha 6. Koti teertha 7. Chakra theertha 8.Manmadha teertha are termed as Ashta theerthas. The importance of bath in this Ashta teerthas can know from Shreegurucharitra. Some devotees are taking bath everyday during their stay at Ganagapur and some are taking atleast one time bath during their yatra period. Bath in Ashtateerthas in Poornima,Amaavasya, Karthika, Makara sankramana, Narakachathurdashi days is very powerful. Even the sins and doshas will be removed by having bath in these Ashtateerthas.

CONCLUSION:

It is sure sir, no one can enter in Ganagapur premises without the interest of Lord Datattreya. Ganagapur yatra is a powerful one and when one pays a visit to this Ganagapur kshetra, he gets a sence of satisfaction, a feeling of joy and  peace of mind. Lord Dattatreya lives here even today in the invisible form and giving boons to his devotees. So, have a trip to Ganagapur kshetra and have the blessings of Shree Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy Maharaj.

CONVEYANCE AND ROUTE TO GANAGAPUR:

Sreekshetra Ganagapur is in the Gulbarga district of Karnataka State in India. It is around 45 kms from the district headquarter Gulbarga. Karnataka state road transportation buses are there from Gulbarga to Ganagapur for every 1 or 1.5 hours and the journey is around 1.5 hours from Gulbarga to Ganagapur. Ganagapur Road railway station is also there, but some trains are not haivng halt/stop at this station and the if at all stop is there, the halting period of the train is negligible when compared to the halt at Gulbarga. So, it is always better to getdown at Gulbarga and it is also convinient to take lunch/tiffins in the hotels or for booking reservations for bus/trains to any stations or for return journeys etc.

From Hyderabad:There are direct trains from Hyderabad to Gulbarga.  Hyderabad to Mumbai/Pune expresses and Rajkot express are haivng halt at Gulbarga.It is around 6 to 7 hours journey. Passenger trains facility is also there from Hyderbad station. There are direct buses to Ganagapur from Imlibun busstation of Hyderabad. Non-stop buses are available from Hyderabad to Gulbarga. (6 hours journey)

From Vijayawada:There are direct trains from Vijayawada to Guntakal only. Amaravathi expressand Prashanthi expresses are having stop at Guntakal. One have to getdown at Guntakala and have to catch another train running towards Mumbai to reach Gulbarga. Guntakal to Gulbarga the journey time is around 6 hours.

From Bangalore/Chennai:There are direct trains from Chennai or Bangalore to Gulbarga. The trains running towards Mumbai/Pune are having halt at Gulbarga.Even Karnataka Government/Private luxury/Hi-Tech buses are running from Bangalore to Gulbarga.

From Pune/Mumbai:All the trains running towards Chennai or Guntakal are having halt at Gulbarga. Government/Private buses are also running to Gulbarga

Evening visited the Ashram of our Pujya Gurudeva foundly we call ‘Appaji’.  Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamiji, Mysore. New Datta Temple is under final stages of construction in Ganagapura. On top of the temple huge Image of Lord Dattathreya with Cow is constructed which is visible from a very long distance. .  Temple is being build on a huge open land  and much spacious. Probably in Feb 2010 Temple will be opened to all.

Don’t spend thousands of Rupees for Bangalore weekend for peace and happiness, spend few hundred for Petrol and food. There are n number of places around the radius of 100 to 150 kms near Bangalore and easily return home by sunset. Either on Kanakapura Road or Mysore Road.

We went such a place known to everyone. Covered Big Banyan Tree, Manchanabele Dam  and Savana Durga Lakshmi Narashimha Temple.  Left Bangalore by 11 am with my Suzuki Access 125 filling 3 liters petrol.  Weather was playing hide and seek game. It was about to rain …no rain…I was at constant 40km speed as it was new vehicle and don’t want to take risk.

En route to Big Banyan tree (BBT) stopped at beautiful  lake.  This place on either side of the road nursery farms made more beautiful.  Took few rural lifestyle snaps.  See the  above snap..Do they have any Weekend ? Before BBT at Ramohalli newly built Bhruhat Mukti Naga Temple is there. For that you have to take Right turn on this road and go little further. There is a big board mentioning the direction.  We didn’t go there. Pending for next visit. By the time we reached the BBT it was 12.30.

Even its Sunday there was not that much crowd.

Monkeys were hanging from the tree and giving good entertainment to people.

BBT was maintained very neatly.  Have a full slow walk on the path around the tree, enjoy the monkeys play, and relax on the stone bench forgetting everything bothering you.

From BBT proceed on the same road i.e., Magadi Road approach. After 3 kms we reached CHANDAPPA CIRCLE. The Byalalu village.  Worldwide fame village after ISRO setup the ISSDC (Indian Space Science Data Centre) also   this is Deep Space Network (DSN) centre to track Chandrayaan I.

“The Indian Space Science Data Centre forms the third element of the Chandrayaan-1 ground segment. ISSDC receives (from IDSN as well as other external stations that support Chandrayaan-1), stores, processes, systematically archives, retrieves and distributes the precious scientific information sent by Chandrayaan-1 cameras, spectrometers and other scientific instruments from the lunar orbit. It has state-of -the- art computers and data storage devices. ISSDC is also located at Byalalu.” –source..ISRO web site.

Take right turn at Chandappa circle which leads to MANCHANABELE DAM .  Enoute around 3 kms road is not good.  Actually no road. Manage slowly till u get good road. Scenic panoramic view of Arkavathi River between the hills welcomes u . Enjoyed the cool breeze, natural pollution free.   I had the doubt that in July weather water will be there?

But there is plenty of water making the view very beautiful. Take right turn on the kachha road drive carefully as this fully a stone road. Further a Km drive you will reach Dam backside  BWSSB’s Jack well pumping station.

Note:  on this road before taking left turn to this Jack well on the right side observe the Warning Board as this is a lonely place and don’t venture alone especially for couples. Beside the Jack well there is a small foot road below the hill which takes to Reservoir gate. On request they may allow to enter the Dam.  Return to the main road and take right proceed further downhill crossing the Dam, quarters this road leads to Savanadurga.

After crossing the dam and Manchanabele village you will see a board on Right side leading to Savanadurga.  From here almost 9kms very good road till Magadi – Ramnagara Main Road. A 100% thick vegetation forest, pin drop silence, here and there can found the  shepherd, cowherds,  and KSRTC bus on this road. While driving in this dense forest makes fear.  Good landscapes, Boulders are festive for lens.

On the approaching main road take right turn which goes to Magadi.  Travel till u reaches a village Nayakana Playa. On the right side you will find age old Tourism information Board and the same state rusted Arch welcomes to Savanadurga.  Now prepare to travel on the road which is filled by stones and pot holes only. A 3 km small ghat road stretch inside the forest.  First you will see a big boulder looks like a sleeping elephant and a beautiful sleepy village Savandi Durga present called SAVANA DURGA. First on the left side there is an ancient temple called “Sri Kshetra Sri Savandi Veerabhadra Swami Temple”. You can find a Single stone Garuda gamba, Architectural Pillar mandapam which is in depilatory state, big single stone Arch much more. Around this temple there are few more ruins of temples and fort can be visited.   From there few distance below foot hill, the famous Sri Lakshmi Narashimha Temple located.  As it was closing time (Sunday from morning to till 4pm and again reopens @ 6pm) we had a peaceful darshan of lord and relaxed for some time and left to Bangalore back. If you plan only for Savana Durga can climb the hill and reach the top to enjoy the beauty of Nature and below these two Temple atmospheres.

While returning we came via Magadi.  After crossing the Hospet junction take right towards Bangalore.  Don’t forget to purchase the real fresh farm vegetables on the road side. Fill your baggage for next one week, because this quality will not get in Bangalore. At Thippagondana Halli Reservoir there was no water found in Arkavathi. Very Sad Bad days ahead.  I took the deviation at Tavarekere which leads to Kengeri.  Don’t approach this road in night if you are a two wheeler. It is a very thick dense bushes road and very lonely place.  At last by 9pm our trip ended and entered the concrete jungle to carry forward the same Mon-key-Mou circus.

Distance: Total 120 Kms.  Bangalore to Dodda Alada Mara or Big Banyan Tree +- 23kms…..BBT to Manchanabele Dam 13 kms…MB Dam to Savana Durga-18 kms.   Savanadurga to Bangalalore Via Magadi Road…60 Kms.
