I came to know about this place from our BNG Birds group. With the available info , early morning by 5.30 started our journy. It was raining and no where it was about to stop. Before reaching the RV college of engineering I was half wet. Weather was too cold and tempting to go ahead. I was aware till Kommaghatta Village used to go frequently that side.

Our First stop at Kommaghatta village lake. Now water was draining for the renovation. There were many numbers of Cattle Egret (correct me if I am wrong) found busy catching the fish.

Spent few minutes here and continued to search the Bheemanakuppe kere. After crossing the Kommaghatta village around 2 kms in front of a farm found many parrots and Birds. But the farm gate was locked and there was no space to enter at all.

After this we took left turn deviation till Anchepalya village and inside cross the BettanaPalya and further few kilometers we were in front of the Lake.

It is very big tank and used for irrigation. We found many birds sitting on the electric cable, inside the bushes, and few roaming on the grass land.

As I am no voice on these birds just enjoyed seeing them and wherever possible photographed. The surrounding is fully greenery. At this time rain has taken break and sun shined little. Just roamed on the kere ere and further down on a tree many weaver bird nests found.

But couldn’t find a single weaver bird coming to nest. Waited for long and went walking on the irrigation tank bund down the lake till the end of paddy fields in search of birds. On the return path I found a Blue King Fisher lazily sitting on the water bed.

It was already 9.30am and started from there. At the cross road we took right turn which they told will connect to Mysore road.

For an enjoyable Rural village atmosphere with manageable Road:

Mysore Road —-after RV College take right cross the railway track reach Kengeri Satilate Town–on the main road take left, cross Kengeri railway Station further take right turn ie., Bande Mutt Road….cross Nice Road Bridge…..down the road Kommaghatta Lake and village…….travel 3kms on the same road on your left you will find a board “Padmashree Institution” take left here and cross the Sulekere village travel till Hosapalya Village. You will find a shop “Sai Ram Enterprise” and few small shops, take right turn (careful u may miss this road) road are not good. After crossing Bettanapalya village further 1 km you will reach Bheemana Kuppe Kere.

Good Road Urban Atmosphere:

On Mysore road from Kengeri 4^th Km ..Cross Raja rajeshwari Medical College….Challaghatta village down on left Jagath Pharma….Take Right turn here. Board indicating road to Shiradi Saibaba Anandmaye Temple and Manjunatha Nagar will found. (See the Photo Below). Cross the railway track travel around 3 kms—cross Surabhi Public School to reach the Hosapalya Village. Here take left and follow the above said direction.

The second expedition with  my Access125  on Mysore Road.  Visited Janapada Loka .  The first break is before entering the Ramnagara an beautiful Hanuman temple which is on the road side. Here many numbers of Pigeons are found, surrounded by trees, smiley flower plants, good place to relax. Got the blessings of Lord and spent few minutes there.           

After a small gap continued our journey crossed the Ramnagara the fame of ‘Shole’ Hindi super hit film, reached the Janapada Loka which is located between Ramanagara and Channapatna.

Shri Nage Gowda is the Founder of ‘Janapada Loka’, which is one of the wonders in the 20th century history of Karnataka. Janapada Loka established near Ramanagara on Bangalore-Mysore highway, on a sprawling 15 acres of land full of greenery, is the fruit of his hard work dedication and organizing ability and was inaugurated on 12th March 1994. It has grown into a very significant folk cultural centre in the country and is a hub of Folk cultural activities.

The imposing main entrance is the chief attraction of Janapada Loka. A majestic door adorned with Harige and Trumpets and tall brass Nandidwajas on either side of the pathway enhance the grandeur of the entrance. The design of the door is a perfect blend of the Shaiva and Vaishnava cult. The information Center sells cassettes, CDs, DVDs and books related to folk art forms and literature and a video show of documentaries and other folk art forms are screened in the Video Scope theatre in Janapada Loka. A big grinding stone, which used to be pulled by two bisons, is a fitting icon of Janapadaloka. “Lokamatha Mandira”is a museum displaying articles of daily use of folk people like cooking vessels, equipments used for farming and animal husbandry and other such rural activities. “Chithra Kuteera” which reflects different stages of the founder’s literary achievements and struggle during the building of Janapada Loka and also houses photographs of different folk art forms of Karnataka. “Loka Mahal” is a two-storied building where more than 5000 folk artefacts are aesthetically displayed.

A community house called “Doddamane” built in the traditional rural style with a central courtyard surrounded by pillars serves as a place for workshops and seminars and also provides lodging facility to visiting artists. “Shilpamaala”, a place for stone memorials, tell their own story. Aayagaarara Maala, Lokapriya MahaGanapathi temple where Lord Ganesha is ever ready to bless the visitors, a colossal open-air theatre in the Greek style with a capacity to seat 1000 people, boating facility and playground for children are the attractions at Janapada loka.

Artists who have great skill in handicrafts like pottery and wooden toys stay here and are engaged in making artefacts. After imparting training in Dollu kunitha, Kolata, Goravara kunitha and other allied arts, in-house performing troupes of Janapada Loka are formed. Bangalore University has recognized Janapada loka as a research centre. This Janapada University started in 1999 conducts Janapada Diploma and Janapada Certificate courses. Folk related development camp, folk research workshop, and seminars are held regularly in the campus. A fully equipped library has been established. Annual Festivals like Lokothsava in February – March, Kite Festival in July, Dassera Festival in October are celebrated without fail which attracts visitors from far and wide. In essence, Janapada loka is a treasure house of Folk museums and folk related activities and attract scholars, interested persons, and researchers. Janapada loka emerging as one of the best Folk cultural centers of the world is bubbling with activities throughout the year.

First visited the museum “LOKA MATHA MANDIRA” a rare collections of Karnataka rural folk’s tradition day today usage. This museum displays articles of daily use employed by rural people which includes huge storage bins for storing grains, pots and utensils used in cooking, articles made of wood and iron used in animal husbandry and agricultural implements. In general, the orderly display with proper informative labels gives a clear picture of the rural life to the spectators. We had the rare opportunity that the guide of this museum himself is a folk artist. When we requested he song a beautiful song narrated the usefulness of BAMBOO (Bideru). 

Next Visited the Loka Mahal : This museum is a spacious two-storied building. In the ground floor there are life size dolls dressed as Mudalapaya Yakshagana artists, coorg couple, Dasayya and Goravayya – village characters, pied piper, Halakki Vokaaligas- who perform dances of nomadic tribe and harvest dances. The other rarities that find a place here are various arms and weapons, the articles used in wedding ceremony, weights and measures of yester years, ritual items used while performing pooja and lastly a few items from the kitchen. The Central courtyard in the ground floor displays large wooden idols of ‘Bootha’ or Ghost worship.

The First floor exhibits a rare collection of various folk instruments and other wooden parts of chariots and stone idols. Special dolls made of hides-Togalu Gombegalu, puppets, apparels of Badagu tittu and Tenkutittu Yakshagana artists (Forms of Folk Theatre), Ganjeefa art pieces (playing cards), children’s playthings, Soma and Harige(masks) exhibited here capture the hearts and minds of the visitors.

Coming out of Lokamahal and on your right side few meters further you will find “SHILPA MALA”  (above Photo)A large collection of stones arranged in Shilpamala are not just ordinary stones of the present day but special stones dating back to a period more than one thousand two hundred years. These are all inscribed stones, which were being planted in honour of brave people for their achievements. These are identified as Veeragallu- in honour of a war hero, Satikalllu- in honour of a faithful wife and Gokallu- in honour of a beloved cow. Besides these, there are many idols of worship, which had been abandoned and lying in ruin in different parts of Karnataka. These have been collected preserved and displayed here with serenity. Behind the Shilpamala is a Temple of Ganesh-built in a typical village style.

 The whole atmosphere makes the visitors feel one with the nature around.

Come out of Shilpamala and put your legs forward enjoying the cool breeze u will stand in front of the artificial lake named as LOKA SAROVARA. One beautiful white Swan has placed here and  it roams within the corner of this lake, Retuned in the same path next to shilpa mala an wooden Chariot is placed under the shed. This is HALSASURU CHARIOT : Halasuru chariot was a part of Someshwara Temple in Bangalore , which has significant historical importance. As the chariot was slightly damaged due to a fire accident and was considered inauspicious for puja it was abandoned. The chariot thus discarded was brought here in its full form, restored and preserved for its beautiful and delicate carvings.

Further down next to Loka Mahal  we visited HERITAGE VILLAGE. Inside this we entered the first hut where two rural couples were busy making the clay pot, and articles.

 This is an open-air exhibition of/; tools of rural vocations like pottery and smithy, sugarcane juice extractor made of wood, oil extractor, Kottana- rice pounding equipment, tools used in agriculture, nets and boats used in fishery and such rural activities. The other exhibits are weapons used in hunting, a bullock cart, special cart – sarotu, a chariot and a palanquin decorated with beads. To complete the scene a model of a beautiful village house is built in Aayagararamala.  

Coming out of Aayagara Maala near maingate reenter again and u will reach OPEN AIR THEATER and PUPPET THEATER.

An impressive and big open-air theatre built in Greek style with a capacity to hold 1000 persons at a time. The theatre comes alive with programmes of Folk art forms on the last sunday of every month. Adjacent to it is a well-equipped green room. The theatre has received applause from none other than Late Sri B.V Karantha, one of the best directors of theatre arts that India has produced.

In Puppet Theater we couldn’t se the show as there was no current. They had exhibited the Dasara Dolls collection and beautifully arranged and very much impressed.

Coming out from there just passed few huts and thought they were of local residents. 

Passing by we  met the first folk artist,  who told that they are the artists who stay here and exhibits there rural art. I was about to miss this chance. We went inside and in front of the hut an old lady was decorating the entrance of the door. They were called DEEVARU Community.

  The hut also built according to there natural hut in there native.  Inside the house walls were beautifully sketched with art which were in final and draft stage, on request they gave the phose to lens.  In Bangalore an organization called Center for Revival of Indigenous Art (CFRIA) will conduct workshop on CHITTARA  ART.

About DEEVARU Community.

Chittara is an autochthonous art practice of an indigenous community called “Deevaru” residing at Sagar, Shimoga Dist, Karnataka State, INDIA. Chittara drawings are intricate patterns that represents the auspicious ceremonies and rituals of life symbolized in geometric patterns. Its is a socio cultural art practice of women passed on from generation, using eco friendly materials.

 Here we got a chance to meet Dr.Kuruva Basavaraj, Litterateur, Folklorist and curator of Janapada Loka. Actually they saw us taking the photograph of this community hence asked me about the reason to documenting.  We got very good information from them about Deevaru community and the programmes conducted in Janapada Loka regularly.  I t was our pleasure to have few minutes along with Dr.KB.

 With this our half day off the city life come to end. Yes I forgot to tell u how Janapada Loka visit ends without visiting the Kamath Loka Ruchi next to it. Had a cup of strong coffee and Bhajji and returned back by night.

With the blessings of Lord Guru Datta we have visited Ganagapura recently. We had been guided by our friend Sri Subrahmanya Bharathula of Markapur for contacting the Archaka, lodging and the perfroming the pooja. A day in Ganapur gives us some sort of relif and I cannot express in words. Such a sacred place. Performed Ekavartha Rudrabhisheka, Nirguna Paduka seva, madhukari and evening Pallakki seva.

The below information on Ganagapura is the extract of email from Sri. Subramanya Bharathula of Markapur (AP) . He is very kind and provided the valuable information on this divya kshetra.

I think, Dattaguru wants to explain the details of Ganagapur kshetra to all the members of this group. Actually, I wanted to upload it in the begining of this year 2006. But, I don’t know the reason, it kept aside. Two immediate mails were received today to know the details of Ganagapur kshetra. Pls proceed to read this information. Even by reading this information, I think, all of us get a feeling that, we are in Ganagapur kshetra. That is the greatness of Shri Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy who is the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.

TEERTHE TAYA THAYA|| YETI POONIT VAVAYA||

Generally, Saints confer holiness not only on human beings but also on the places of pilgrimmage. Then the holy places come there to become more holy and at such places, even an athiest becomes a  believer in God, the human beings can follow the path of God and perform penance. When such penance is performed at the instance of a Guru and when one follows the path of God indicated by the Guru it becomes fruitful.Man’ s mind must be oriented towards God. Then only, he can become happy. This is the experience of great sages and it is sure that one can experience such feelings at Shree Kshetra Ganagapur.

Importance of Ganagapur kshetra:

Shree kshetra Ganagapur is a holy place of Lord Dattatreya and the place is very important “Darshaneeya kshetra”.  The place is connected to Sri Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy who is the second incarnation of Lord Dattatreya.  The kshetra importance was explained by Shreeguru and one can be seen in “Shree Gurucharitra” . There is an assurance from Shreeguru that he would forever abide at Ganagapur and go round the village for ‘Biksha’ at noon is literally true even today. Offering “maadhukari” to the people at Ganagapur and taking biksha from atleast 5 houses is having very improtance at this holy place. Even today also, the process is continuing and the devotees are having faith the Lord Dattatreya is taking biksha everyday at Ganagapur kshetra.  Shri guru Sri Nrusimha saraswathy swamy confirmed the same and it can be seen in Gurucharitra.  At the time of Antardhan, Shreeguru said to the disciples and citizens of Ganagapur as follows.

” You need not worry. I shall stay at this Ganagapur kshetra secretly.  I shall have bath at the Bheema-Amaraja sangam river in the morning. In the mid day, I shall come to Ganagapur math and accept biksha in this village and accept your puja, devotional services in this Muth. From the view point of the public, I am going away from this place. My living presence will be experienced by any one who bathes in the Sangam and takes darshan of my padukas here. I will receive pujas at this  kshetra in the form of paudkas”. The Padukas of Shree Nrusimha saraswathy swamy at this place are “Nirguna padukas” ( the padukas are not having any shape).

Shreeguru has been blessing his devotees with his divine acts on countless occassions. The aspirations of Datta devotees who worship him at Ganagapur ksehtra with true love, faith and dedication will be fulfilled. The miraculous experineces of such will ever remian hidden in the devotees own hearts. This is true even today also and devotees are getting experiences of Lord Datta’s presenct at Ganagapur kshetra. Mentally retarded people, the people who are suffering from chronic deceases are coming to this place and getting cured from their sad feelings. The trouble of spirits and ghosts vanishes and one can get peace of mind with the darshan of Swamy padukas at this kshetra.

The temple is generally opened at 3.00 a.m. in the morning everyday and the priests are giving Kakada harathi to swamy padukasat that time.The temple is opened upto night 9.00 p.m. without any intervention.

ACCOMODATION FACILITIES:

Lodging facilities are available. It is difficult to get a room on important days like poornima etc., Some private Ashrama authorities are giving rooms on rent basis. Some priests are also providing lodging and boarding facilities on payment basis.General hotels (not luxurious) are availble for normal type food. Devasthan rooms are also available at cheaper rents.

Recommended Priest to perform Pujas/sevas in the temple:

I am recommending Shri NAGESH ACHYUTHA BHAT Pujari of the temple to perform the pujas in the temple of Ganagapur kshetra. In Ganagapur temple, the priests hawa is the final.As per my knowledge and experience, the above pujari is charging reasonable price for the seva/pujas to SHreeguru and faithfull personality. One boring pump is there in his house for identification purpose. He will arrange lunch and/or dinner in his house and he will show the proper facilities for staying purpose on rent base.

But during these days, it is very difficult to have darshan of Swamy padukas. So, it is always better to advice the devotees to visit Ganagapur in the general days to have free darshan of Lord Dattatreya.

Sangam:

Sangam is a meeting point of Bheema and Amaraja rivers. Sangam is like Prayaga. The importance of Sangam was explained by Shreeguru and it can be seen in Shreegurucharitra. Who ever takes a bath in Sangam, he will free from his sins and his wishes will be fulfilled.Bath in Sangam in Kartheeka maasa, Maagha maasa, Makara sankranthi, poornima and Amaavashya days.Before and after Grahana period is very virtuous.

Puranich history of Sangam: There is a puranic history that Jallundhara Rakshasas were on war. Indra went to Shri Shankara and said “we kill Rakshasaas, but from each drop of their blood, new Rakshasaas are born  and they have spread in three lokas. They have kelled many Gods”. By hearing this Shri Shankara was started to kill the Rakshasaas in the form of Rudra.  Indra said ‘you will kill the Rakshasaas, but please suggest any device to make the Gods alive’. Then Shri Shankara recited Amritha mantra and gave a jar filled with nectar. Indra sprinkled the nector onthe Gods and made them alive. While Indra was going with the jar of the remaining nectar, some drops fell on the earth and a river was created called “AMARAJA”. Taking bath in this river prevents deceases and untimely death. This river meets Bheema river and the point is known as Sangam. Hence, Sangam place is a virtuous place and adviced the devotees to take bath in the Sangam without fail.

OUDUMBAR TREE: The Oudumbar tree is situated at the place nearer to Sangam.  After having bath in Sangam  a mug/pot/bottle of Sangam water has to be takne and it should be poured a the root of famous Oudumbar tree. Do the pradakshina with a minimum of 11/21/108 rounds to the tree by chanting Datta nama ‘DIGAMBARA DIGAMBARA SHREE PAADA VALLABHA DIGAMBARA”. Somany Sadhus/devotees are continuously doing Shreegurucharitra payara int he presence of the tree. One who perform Gurucharitra parayan with sapthaha deeksha at the premises of this oudumbar tree, he will definitely have the darshan of Lord Dattatreya in any form and their desires will be fulfilled. It is really true and even for today also.

History of Oudumbar tree at Ganagapur kshetra: Leprosy decease of a brahmin by name Narahari was cured by Shree guru Nrusimha saraswathy swamy and the story can also seen in Shreegurucharitra. Narahari bowed to Shreeguru and began to pray him at that time. The 8 sloka stotra comosed by Narahari was become famous and are being reciting in the temple at night even today also. Each sloka ends with “VANDAYAAMI NAARASIMHA SARASWATHEESHA PAAHIMAAM”. The stotra is now familiar as Nrusimha saraswathy ashtaka. Shreeguru blessed Narahari and siad, whoever recite the sloka every day with full devotion, they will get ashta aishwarya, spiritual power, wealth, fame and noble offspring.

Ashwatha vriksha:

Ashwatha vriksha is nearer to Sangam and is very nearer to Oudumbar tree. Shree guru performed his daily anushtan under this tree. The importance of this Vriksha can also seen in Shreegurucharitra. The regular SEJA HARATHI at 8.00 p.m. at this anushtan place is very powerful. Paduka darshan at this place is opened from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 pm only. In other timings upto night 9.00 pm, we can see the Swamy rupa with alankara. This tree is like Kalpavriksha and is adviced to perform pradakshina to this vriksha, it will grant boons to such devotees.

Sangameshwaralay:

After worshipping Oudumbar and Ashwatha trees, worship Sangameshwara in the Sangameshwaralaya temple with devotion. This Shivalinga is like Mallikarjuna of Srisaila. Bow to Nandi and Chandi and have 3 rounds like round from Nandi to Chandi and Chandi to Nandi back and have darshan of Lord Shankara.

Ash Hill:

Ash hill is nearer to Sangam and it is said that there was a hill from which Ash came from the days of Lord Parashurama. Lord Parashurama performed penance at this place. The ash is very powerful and now it is in the form of Mud only. The wearing of ash by mixing with oodi is very powerful and it will protect those persons  from DRISHTI doshas. It will protect the children for Baalarishta and Graha dosha. If the ash is applied slightly everyday on the stomach part of pregnant ladies, then they will deliver a healthy child with some “Tejarupa”. Several experiences were also observed with this application of the Ash on pregnant ladies.

Kalleshwar temple:

Kalleshwaralaya is nearer to Manmadha theertha i.e., one of the Ashta theerthas and is nearly 1 km from Swamy mutt. Auto and Taanga conveyance is there for Kalleshwar temple. The importance of Kalleshwar temple was also explained in Shree gurucharitra. Kalleshwara is like Gokarna Mahabaleshwara. By performing Abhisheka in the month of Kartheeka, Maagha and Sravana to Kalleshwara, one’s wishes will be fulfilled. The assurance was given by Shreeguru.

Chinthamani Ganapathi:

The idol of Chinthamani Ganapathy can be seen in the inner side of Swamy Mutt. The devotees who are visiting the Ganagapur kshetra are not aware of this Ganapathi. Shree guru given instructions to the disciples to have the darshan of this Ganapathi in Ganagapur.

Ashta Terthas:

1.Nrusimha teertha2.Sreepaada theertha,3.Rudrapad a theertha 4. Chakra theertha 5. Paapa nashaka teertha 6. Koti teertha 7. Chakra theertha 8.Manmadha teertha are termed as Ashta theerthas. The importance of bath in this Ashta teerthas can know from Shreegurucharitra. Some devotees are taking bath everyday during their stay at Ganagapur and some are taking atleast one time bath during their yatra period. Bath in Ashtateerthas in Poornima,Amaavasya, Karthika, Makara sankramana, Narakachathurdashi days is very powerful. Even the sins and doshas will be removed by having bath in these Ashtateerthas.

CONCLUSION:

It is sure sir, no one can enter in Ganagapur premises without the interest of Lord Datattreya. Ganagapur yatra is a powerful one and when one pays a visit to this Ganagapur kshetra, he gets a sence of satisfaction, a feeling of joy and  peace of mind. Lord Dattatreya lives here even today in the invisible form and giving boons to his devotees. So, have a trip to Ganagapur kshetra and have the blessings of Shree Nrusimha Saraswathy swamy Maharaj.

Sreekshetra Ganagapur is in the Gulbarga district of Karnataka State in India. It is around 45 kms from the district headquarter Gulbarga. Karnataka state road transportation buses are there from Gulbarga to Ganagapur for every 1 or 1.5 hours and the journey is around 1.5 hours from Gulbarga to Ganagapur. Ganagapur Road railway station is also there, but some trains are not haivng halt/stop at this station and the if at all stop is there, the halting period of the train is negligible when compared to the halt at Gulbarga. So, it is always better to getdown at Gulbarga and it is also convinient to take lunch/tiffins in the hotels or for booking reservations for bus/trains to any stations or for return journeys etc.

From Hyderabad:There are direct trains from Hyderabad to Gulbarga.  Hyderabad to Mumbai/Pune expresses and Rajkot express are haivng halt at Gulbarga.It is around 6 to 7 hours journey. Passenger trains facility is also there from Hyderbad station. There are direct buses to Ganagapur from Imlibun busstation of Hyderabad. Non-stop buses are available from Hyderabad to Gulbarga. (6 hours journey)

From Vijayawada:There are direct trains from Vijayawada to Guntakal only. Amaravathi expressand Prashanthi expresses are having stop at Guntakal. One have to getdown at Guntakala and have to catch another train running towards Mumbai to reach Gulbarga. Guntakal to Gulbarga the journey time is around 6 hours.

From Bangalore/Chennai:There are direct trains from Chennai or Bangalore to Gulbarga. The trains running towards Mumbai/Pune are having halt at Gulbarga.Even Karnataka Government/Private luxury/Hi-Tech buses are running from Bangalore to Gulbarga.

From Pune/Mumbai:All the trains running towards Chennai or Guntakal are having halt at Gulbarga. Government/Private buses are also running to Gulbarga

Evening visited the Ashram of our Pujya Gurudeva foundly we call ‘Appaji’.  Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamiji, Mysore. New Datta Temple is under final stages of construction in Ganagapura. On top of the temple huge Image of Lord Dattathreya with Cow is constructed which is visible from a very long distance. .  Temple is being build on a huge open land  and much spacious. Probably in Feb 2010 Temple will be opened to all.

Last Sunday I went to this village after reading the mail thread in BNG Birds group. Previous night I made all arrangements and set my mind to shoot different birds and nature. To my disappointment morning shocked to see heavy rain at 5 am. At last he listen to my pray and give the green signal by 5.45am. I started my solo journey on to these Urban Rural village just 30 kms from Bangalore on Jigani – Anekal road, near Bannerghatta National Park. It’s impossible to stay within the four corners on a weekend in Bangalore. Office stress, traffic, Pollution, oh god list grows like anything. So many people spend thousand rupees for hours in a man made resorts etc…

Don’t spend thousands of Rupees for Bangalore weekend for peace and happiness, spend few hundred for Petrol and food. There are n number of places around the radius of 100 to 150 kms near Bangalore and easily return home by sunset. Either on Kanakapura Road or Mysore Road.

We went such a place known to everyone. Covered Big Banyan Tree, Manchanabele Dam  and Savana Durga Lakshmi Narashimha Temple.  Left Bangalore by 11 am with my Suzuki Access 125 filling 3 liters petrol.  Weather was playing hide and seek game. It was about to rain …no rain…I was at constant 40km speed as it was new vehicle and don’t want to take risk.

En route to Big Banyan tree (BBT) stopped at beautiful  lake.  This place on either side of the road nursery farms made more beautiful.  Took few rural lifestyle snaps.  See the  above snap..Do they have any Weekend ? Before BBT at Ramohalli newly built Bhruhat Mukti Naga Temple is there. For that you have to take Right turn on this road and go little further. There is a big board mentioning the direction.  We didn’t go there. Pending for next visit. By the time we reached the BBT it was 12.30.

Even its Sunday there was not that much crowd.

Monkeys were hanging from the tree and giving good entertainment to people.

BBT was maintained very neatly.  Have a full slow walk on the path around the tree, enjoy the monkeys play, and relax on the stone bench forgetting everything bothering you.

From BBT proceed on the same road i.e., Magadi Road approach. After 3 kms we reached CHANDAPPA CIRCLE. The Byalalu village.  Worldwide fame village after ISRO setup the ISSDC (Indian Space Science Data Centre) also   this is Deep Space Network (DSN) centre to track Chandrayaan I.

ISSDC receives (from IDSN as well as other external stations that support Chandrayaan-1), stores, processes, systematically archives, retrieves and distributes the precious scientific information sent by Chandrayaan-1 cameras, spectrometers and other scientific instruments from the lunar orbit. It has state-of -the- art computers and data storage devices. ISSDC is also located at Byalalu.” –source..ISRO web site.

Take right turn at Chandappa circle which leads to MANCHANABELE DAM .  Enoute around 3 kms road is not good.  Actually no road. Manage slowly till u get good road. Scenic panoramic view of Arkavathi River between the hills welcomes u . Enjoyed the cool breeze, natural pollution free.   I had the doubt that in July weather water will be there?

But there is plenty of water making the view very beautiful. Take right turn on the kachha road drive carefully as this fully a stone road. Further a Km drive you will reach Dam backside  BWSSB’s Jack well pumping station.

Note:  on this road before taking left turn to this Jack well on the right side observe the Warning Board as this is a lonely place and don’t venture alone especially for couples. Beside the Jack well there is a small foot road below the hill which takes to Reservoir gate. On request they may allow to enter the Dam.  Return to the main road and take right proceed further downhill crossing the Dam, quarters this road leads to Savanadurga.

After crossing the dam and Manchanabele village you will see a board on Right side leading to Savanadurga.  From here almost 9kms very good road till Magadi – Ramnagara Main Road. A 100% thick vegetation forest, pin drop silence, here and there can found the  shepherd, cowherds,  and KSRTC bus on this road. While driving in this dense forest makes fear.  Good landscapes, Boulders are festive for lens.

On the approaching main road take right turn which goes to Magadi.  Travel till u reaches a village Nayakana Playa. On the right side you will find age old Tourism information Board and the same state rusted Arch welcomes to Savanadurga.  Now prepare to travel on the road which is filled by stones and pot holes only. A 3 km small ghat road stretch inside the forest.  First you will see a big boulder looks like a sleeping elephant and a beautiful sleepy village Savandi Durga present called SAVANA DURGA. First on the left side there is an ancient temple called “Sri Kshetra Sri Savandi Veerabhadra Swami Temple”. You can find a Single stone Garuda gamba, Architectural Pillar mandapam which is in depilatory state, big single stone Arch much more. Around this temple there are few more ruins of temples and fort can be visited.   From there few distance below foot hill, the famous Sri Lakshmi Narashimha Temple located.  As it was closing time (Sunday from morning to till 4pm and again reopens @ 6pm) we had a peaceful darshan of lord and relaxed for some time and left to Bangalore back. If you plan only for Savana Durga can climb the hill and reach the top to enjoy the beauty of Nature and below these two Temple atmospheres.

While returning we came via Magadi.  After crossing the Hospet junction take right towards Bangalore.  Don’t forget to purchase the real fresh farm vegetables on the road side. Fill your baggage for next one week, because this quality will not get in Bangalore. At Thippagondana Halli Reservoir there was no water found in Arkavathi. Very Sad Bad days ahead.  I took the deviation at Tavarekere which leads to Kengeri.  Don’t approach this road in night if you are a two wheeler. It is a very thick dense bushes road and very lonely place.  At last by 9pm our trip ended and entered the concrete jungle to carry forward the same Mon-key-Mou circus.

Distance: Total 120 Kms.  Bangalore to Dodda Alada Mara or Big Banyan Tree +- 23kms…..BBT to Manchanabele Dam 13 kms…MB Dam to Savana Durga-18 kms.   Savanadurga to Bangalalore Via Magadi Road…60 Kms.

Recently I went to my native, which was saw  happiest  and sad moments of my life. to meet my childhood friends, my schools at Bhadravathi. That i will post later. On sunday morning I with my friend went to Koodli, which i frequently visited during College Days.

Koodli is a small village with very Big heritage behind. It is 16 Kms from Shimoga on Holehonnur – Channagiri Road and the same distance from Bhadravathi, Steel Town.

Rivers Tunga(ತುಂಗಾ ನದಿ)  and Bhadra(ಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿ) -Joins here, hence the name Koodli . From here onwards both rivers together became TUNGABHADRA till it joins KRISHNA river in Andra Pradesh and finally dissolves in Bay of Bengal.

TUNGA RIVER born in the Western Ghats on a hill known as Varaha Parvata at a place called Gangamoola. From here, the river flows through two districts in Karnataka -Chikmagalur District and Shimoga District. It is 147 km long and merges with the Bhadra River at Koodli. The river is famous for the sweetness of its water. There is a belief that       ” Thunga panam Ganga snanum” which means we should drink the water of river thunga and take bath in river Ganga.

BHADRA RIVER  born in the Western Ghats range, and flows east across theDeccan Plateau, joined by its tributaries the Somavahini, Thadabehalla, and Odirayanahalla. The river flows through the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. A dam was built across the river near Lakkavalli. The Bhadra meets the Tunga River at Koodli.

On the banks of the confluence there is an age old temple built by Hoysala and Ikkeri Kings  called Rameshwara Temple.  A beautifully maintained, with gardens, lawns and more over neatness by ASI (Archelogical Survey of India).  

Behind the temple a  small roofless temple with nandi denotes the exact point where the two rivers meet, and is considered to be very sacred. At sangama lord called  as Sangameshwara. At confluence point there will be always water.

While going to the river on the left side we can find another famous temple, which is Kshetra Devate  Sri Chitamani Narasimha Swamy Temple beside the Sangameshwara temple.It belived to be installed & worshipped by Sri Prahlada.

There are two mutt in the Koodli. One is Shankara mutt (Advaita Philosophy) & another one is Akshobhya thirtha Mutt (Dvaita Philosophy).

Shankara Mutt

There is very old Indian style school of learning for Shankara philosophy, called the koodli mutt. This has a long history: onetime in 15th or 16th century, the chief swami of shringeri had gone to a teerthayaatre, probably to kashi. He did not return for a long time, which caused the deputy chief to take up the chief’s position. But the chief was alive and did return to Shringeri after a few days. But he of course could not go in to the matt where his own pupil was the chief, so he left shringeri and started his own matt at the sangama of tunga and bhadra, kudli, and this came to be known as kudli Shringeri mutt. Now in the beginning of 1900s, a new swami took the position of the chief swamy here. He was formerly the teacher of his highness Krishnaraya Wodeyar the 4th, Maharaja of mysore. This brought good times to this matt again. Between the original founder and this person, few talented persons had been chiefs here, who made this place, keep up the standards. After independence, one particular person was very talented and influential, and made the mutt a noted place again.

 

Arya Akshobhya Thirtha Mutt

It has stated by Sri Akshobhya Thirtha (one of the prominent disciples of Sri Madhvacharya) around 13th or 14th Century. Sri Mutt had very good scholar of Sanskrit & Madhvacharya’s philosophy as there Petadhipathies (Cheif Swami) till to date.  There is very well maintained Goshala (Cow yard) by AAT Mutt.

At the entrance of the village, Sri Bhrameshwara Swami welcomes you to koodli.  Further you will see Bhavani Shankara Temple, Vidhya Shankara Temple, and  few many small temples are there in this single road village. 

Uniqueness  of Koodli Village.

* Combination of Dvaitha  and Advitha Philosophy

* Onthe Right side of the houses River Tunga Flows and on the Left side houses River Bhadra Flows.

* In this small hamlet, the hindus religious place Muslims also reside together. They have built two mosques here.  They stay entrance of the village.

The Sad thing noticed here is below monuments are thrown on the road side and lies along the cow dung etc..Can ASI give life to these monumnets and shift to safer place.

By noon we returned back to Bhadravathi and after having a lunch in my friend house bid adieu to them and left to Shimoga……

How to reach  Koodli.

From Shimoga>–> Buses available any time.  Buses plying towards Chitradurga,  Channagiri passes via Holehonnur.  Getdown at Koodli entrance and walk 2kms inside or get down at Holehonnur and catch the Auto to Koodli.  Travel time from Shimoga to Koodli is 30min to 45mins.

From Bhadravathi>–> Buses available to Hole honnur 14kms and from there get an Auto to Koodli which is 3kms from there.  Travel time from Bhadravathi to Koodli is 30min to 45mins.

Every day hundred’s of people visit the Passport office and many of them found returning back because of not having the proper information. Even though officially year back they stopped accepting the manual application. No where it is documented and still you can download the forms (These can be submitted only at Dist. passport centers and Post offices). I would like to provide the details for those needed information on Tatkal passport.

Good News: Tatkal token increased to 150 per day from May-2009. Thanks Sandeep and Senthil for updating.

Second Floor : Tatkal Special counter for document verification and payment. 

No more manual, Hand written  applications are accepted at RPO Chennai. Fill the online application @  https://passport.gov.in/pms/Information.jsp

· Select your city as Chennai .

· Don’t be panic when you see the appointment date is above one month. This is a general appointment date for both Normal and Tatkal applications.

Fill the form verifying each line without any mistake. 

· Once completed click submit, system will now  genarate a  barcoded form with all details you have entred  and will have a unique ID with Appointment date and Your name will be imprinted on all the form.   Write down the refrence number on the form before taking the print. Without knowing the number you may not able to retrive the form in the event of any on line malfunction or browser reset.

· Fill the form and visit the Regional Passport office First Floor before 10.30 and know the cut off date from the officer to submit the form.

· Each day only first  150 members are allowed to submit the Tatkal applications at the special counter Second floor. Hence it is better to know your cut off date earlier. For example. Applicant on 1st of April may get 30th April as appointment and the Tatkal cutoff may be on 6th or 7th April itself(excluding the holidays).  See the above snap shot as on today.

· Note only first 60 Members are allowed and suggest to be there in Passport office within 5.30Am. Now from May 2009 it has been increased to 150 , still dont take chance visiting late. They will start the verification by 10am and if any one doesn’t know his/her appointment date waiting in the que will be waste. Hence know your cutt off date earlier. Once you are ready with application  and relavent documents be there before 5.30am before que goes up on the day you submit the appliction. This is my experience.

DOCUMENTS for Tatkal.

· A standard affidavit (Annexure “I”) on non-judicial stamp paper duly attested by a Notary . Next to Sastri Bhavan Building (Opposite to Stadard Charterd Bank) many Notary offices are there and you can approach them. Charges will be 150/-. One Photo to be pasted on the form and they affix the seal.

· 3 passport size photos preferably white background. One on the Front page application without signature on photo and 2 on PP form with cross signed on photos.

I would also like to clarify what is the procedure to get back the passport once it goes to passport office, my friend was asking me this.

One more thing, all the applicants need to arrange the documents in proper manner (i.e inside appln. the 1st one is to be affidavit followed by ration card n other documents) as stated in 1st floor of passport office, otherwise they are made to send back and arrange and again join the queue.

Some ppl on my day after waiting the whole day in queue they were not aware of the order in which the documents have to be arranged,when their turn came the checking officer declined seeing any documents and asked them to arrange it properly, After arranging they were made to stand back of queue in 2nd floor , which delayed their verfication by an hour, though a rare scenario, it is not worth risking.

Last, my sincere thanks to you for making me understand the procedure and i will let you knw when i get my passport.

P.S : Arrangement of documents if people are still confused after reading it in passport office.. they can go ahead with some agents in ground floor who would do it for Rs 10

These  birds found in backyard of my village home during my recent visit.  I never expected this much of birds are there behind my home. Of course I am visiting after a long gap with my new lens… It was a very short visit and took the shots with the available light and time. 

Many of these birds name I dont know. Readers pls. update the Birds name in comments……..

I had been to Kukke Sri Subramanya, Dharmasthla Sri Manjunatheshwara and Sringeri Sharadambal Temples with my family members.

At all the places had the peaceful darshanam of God and Goddess . Being the month of Jan all temples were floating with Ayyapa devoties every where. Atmosphere was very good and chilling. For Chennaities these weather is not tolarable atleast for me…

Left Bangalore on Satuarday night and reached Kukke Subramanya in the early morning by 5.15pm. By that time already temple streets were filled by devoties, chatrams were full and neatness were vanished away. People visiting the temples doesnt have the civic sense spoiling the temple atmosphere. Spitting every where, Public toilet of chatram seems to be cleaned long back, even holy river Kumara Dhara and stream inside the temple along the Aadi Subramnya look like the drainage. God only has to save his place. We went to river for bath, there also the same thing. No proper arrangements for bathing on the river bank, Not enough light, rooms for changing the cloths, toilets without lite and cleanness. Oh god ………keeping aside all these keeping the holyness of the river in mind had bath in Kumara Dhara in the chilling weather. After two dips temparature was normal.

After having the breakfast left to Sri kshetra Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple.

Had the darshan of Lord subramanya and left to Aadi Subramanya the origin place of this sacred place nearby.

By noon we have reached the Dharmasthala and there also it was very crowd as all the Ayyappa devotes gathered there. We got the room to stay at “VAISHALI” rest room. In Dharmasthala everything look clean, systematic and one can feel…all the efforts by present dharmadhikari Sri Veerendra Heggade. Words are not enough to explain the history and works by Heggade family. visit the below temple official website for more details.

“People in front of Sri Dharmaasthala Manjunateshwara Temple”

Night we had the darshan of Lord Manjunateshwara and took the prasadam at Annapurna dining hall of temple.

Early morning we left for another sacred place Sringeri Sharadamba temple, Sringeri.

There is no direct bus from Dharmasthala to Sringeri. One has to change the three buses to reach the 125 km distance. by 10 am reached the temple. Present at temple main entrance a very big Gopuram construction has begin and the entrance is from behind the administrative office.

Went to Tunga river freshen ourself s and visited the Chandra mouleshwara temple.

Temple an outstanding architecture. Sculptures look lively. It is a Photographers paradise. Next visited all the temples in the premises and went to Sharadambal’s darshan. Two eyes are not enough to see the Ammas beauty , you have to open inner eyes to see her. We have to salute Sri Aadi Shakaracharyas vision to establish the Sharadamba Peetam here. In the evening we went to Narashimha Vana where the previous Jagadgurus Samdhi, Guru’s residence, Prayer hall, Deer park, Temple elephants are located. Present Pontiff Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal gives darshan to devotees every day when they are in Sringeri. We had his darshan and prasadam from his hands and returned to Sharadambal temple again. Night once again had the darshan and had the prasadam at temple and left to Bangalore on the same night. Travel Infornation :.

Dharmasthala and Kukke Subramanya.

-> From Chennai take Mangalore Express and alight at Mangalore Railway station. From State Bank bustand frequent KSRTC buses ply between Mangalore and Dharmasthala. 100 KM. Dharmasthala to Kukke Subramany is 45km and buses are thre. Travel time 1 – 1/2 hr. People visiting from Bangalore having direct buses from Kempegowda Bus Terminus (Majestic) to Kukke Subramanya or Dharmasthala directly. Even Train is available for Kukke Subramanya it is on Mangalore – Bangalore Railway line.

-> For Sringeri from Dharmasthala buses going towards Chickamagalore, Shimoga, Hubli..will give stop at KOTTIGEHARA get down here and catch the bus to BALEHONNUR and from there buses available to Sringeri. Plan to reach Sringeri within evening as temple rooms may not available in the night and festival seasons. Sringeri to Bangalore direct buses are available and towards Chennai catch the bus towards Mangalore direct buses available from Sringeri and from Mangalore Catch the train to Chennai.

Dharmasthala to Kottigehara is 48 Kms – Kottegehara to Balehonnur is 37 Kms and Balehonnur to Sringeri is40 Kms.

Near By places form Sringeri—> Horanadu Sri Annapoorneshwari, Kalasa, Kollur Mookambike.

I had visited this temple last year after visting the Avaniyapuram Narashimha temple. This is one of the biggest and ancient temple near Vandavasi. It has a very tall gopuram entrance and a small gopuram inside prakaram,  again a big prakaram, pillers with carvings of various deities, small hanuman sannidi, beautiful mandapam…A rare Sri Ramar temple with Rama sitting in yoga position. Gigantic Dwarapalakas are amazing to see  the beauty of statuette .

 After Vibhishana Pattabhishekam in Sri Lanka, Rama is returning to Ayodhya along with Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman and other varanas. He notices on the banks of the Kaliyar, Sukha Brahman, a saint in the form of a parrot, offering prayers to Him. The Lord alights from His chariot and just stands before the saint whose joy knows no bounds. The place where Sri Rama blessed the saint came to be known as Nedungunam, meaning noble quality. Although He was in a hurry to go to Ayodhya to save Bharata, Rama did not fail to pay heed to the prayers of a devotee.

Inside the temple Garuda and dwarapalakas reflect artistic excellence. In the sanctum santorum, we are greeted by Lord Rama in sitting position with chin mudra, Sita on his left which is a unique feature. Without His much celebrated Kothandam, He is santha murthi, a rare form. To his right stands Sri Lakshmana. Here Rama assumes the role of Guru, as Anjaneya the greatest devotee is seated listening to his Lord in rapt attention. Here Rama is known as Vijaya Raghavan, thereby signifying Rama’s victory over Ravana. The utsava murtis (two) are holding chakra and conch in their upper hands with the lower right hand showing the abhaya mudra.

 

Vaikanasa the preceptor of Vaikanasa agama is seen with four disciples in a corner. There are two idols of Anjaneya one of which was found in a nearby hill.

Travel information.

Nedungunam is located between Vandavasi to polur road.  Direct buses from Chennai available or reach Vandavasi and catch the bus towards Polur and getdown at 25th Km and  from Chennai its 140th Km.  Bus route from chennai 104 (i think Polur) and 148 Chennai to Vandavasi from CMBT or Tambaram.

 Come December, Bird watchers, lovers, rush to spot these gignatic wings visitors.  It’s fortunate of Chennaities having three sanctuaries nearby.       

        ·         Vedanthangal near Chengalpattu  around 55-60 kms

·         Pulicut or Pazavarkadu and Annamalaicheri towards north on Nellore Highway near Ponneri around 50 kms.                             

·         On the same Nellore  highway in Andra Pradesh border Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and Till Sriharikota SHAR gate. Around 90 kms.

 We the CPC (Chennai Photography Club) members planned to shoot these birds not with guns its Lens.  As planned by 4am all the members gathered in front of CMBT bus terminus and by 4.30 am Twelve members in three cars marched towards Nelapattu bird sanctuary with the aim of reaching before sunrise. 

Nelapattu sanctuary opens only by 8am. After paying entry fee to forest warden. It was a fun and good learning from seniors on photography the Birds, nature etc..Learning the Shutter speed, Aperture, ISO, shooting in dull light and bright etc… At Nelapattu birds were found more, it’s amazing to see their activities. 

 They challenge you shoot me if u can.  From Nelapattu we continued our journey towards Sriharikota SHAR road Pulicat (Part of Andra Pradesh) 15 kms from Sullerpet.  Beautiful road either side green fields and lakes and backwaters till SHAR gate.

From there we wanted to go to Tamilnadu part Pulicut and we stopped at Gummidipoondi town.  Few members planned to return to Chennai on urgency basis and remaining two cars proceeded to Annamalicheri.

After 30 min. of drive we hit the Annamalicheri Village. A very small fishing hamlet. Peoples are shocked to see the unexpected visitors all with big lenses! It didn’t take much time to bargain for boat ride to Pulicut and back. They told best session to come AM Cheri is after March, when water recedes and become shallow. First they took us to spot the birds nearby, but they are very clever. Before we step into the water they all take off to safer places. There is a reserve forest island on the bank of Buckingham canal and in control of AP govt. Even though we couldn’t trace much birds enjoyed fully the one hour boat ride to Pulicut. The ancient Dutch village in opening of Buckingham Canal. There is a Dutch cemetery with about 22 protected tombs, dating back to 1631 to 1655 A.D.  Time came to windoff. By evening returned back to AM cheri and proceeded towards Chennai planning the next shoot out.

Following few details on the places a collective reference from various sources.

1.      Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary:-

Nelapattu bird sanctuary is one of the largest Pelicanary in South East Asia with more than 1500 Pelicans and other birds visiting every year. The big fresh water tank of Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, the presence of good number of “Barringtonia Acutangula” trees which can tolerate inundation for long periods in the tank bed and fore shore areas make this sanctuary a haven for a broad spectrum of bird species for both breeding and roosting. It is a breeding ground for some of the rare and endangered species like Grey Pelicans, Open-billed Storks, Little Cormorants, Spoonbills, White Ibis, Night Herons, etc. A wide variety of birds, like Egrets, Tern, Ducks, Waders etc., also rest here.

2.      Sriharikota-S.H.A.R road (Sriharikota Atomic Missile Range)

Sriharikota is an island and a forest like area, situated on the National Highway No.5 to Chennai- Kolkata, to the east of Sullurupet in-between Pulicat Lake and Bay of Bengal. Under the stewardship of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai of the Indian Space Research Organization a rocket launching space centre was established at Sriharikota in 1968.

Pulicat Lake is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India, spread over the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. It extends over 600 sq km in Andhra Pradesh and is a bird watchers paradise. Migratory water birds and other birds like Flamingos, Painted Storks, Egrets, Grey Pelican, Grey Herons, Pintails, Black winged Stilts, Shovelers, Terns etc.,

 3.       Annamalaicheri Village.

Annamalaicheri has the scope of being developed as an alternative sanctuary for birds. The whole northern region of the Pulicat Lake, roughly north of the SHAR Road, which runs from Sullurpet to the Sriharikota Island, has got lifted up, from Dugirajapatnam in the North, inclining towards the SHAR Road in the South, so that the Northeast Monsoon flood waters that inundate this region get drained as early as from the end of February up to the next monsoon in October. Birds wintering in this region are forced, rather prematurely, to desert these sanctuaries, foregoing any urge for late breeding. During this period of prolonged drought, they fly helter-skelter in search of water and food. For some years, these birds have discovered an alternative site, North of the fishing village of Annamalaicheri, in the southern Tamil Nadu  part of the Pulicat Lake.

4.      Pulicur or Pazavarkadu. Near Ponneri

PULICAT lake, with an average waterspread area of 350 square kilometres, is the second largest lagoon (bay) in India. Pulicat town, at its southern end, lies 55 km north of Chennai. The road from Chennai to Pulicat ends at the boat-jetty on the water front of the Buckingham Canal with a vast spread of overflown tidal waters from the lake, in the north. Across these waters is the beautiful landmark — the lighthouse. Over-loaded ferry boats transporting fisherfolk to the 15 villages on the seaside, boats landing fish-catches, tribal women hand-picking prawns, bullock-carts traversing these waters and tourists bargaining, are some to the rare and fascinating backwater scenes at Pulicat.

Portuguese seem to have landed in about 1510 A.D. They founded a catholic shrine in this village for the deity of Mother Mary which has a mythology behind it. The shrine today has grown into the Church of Our Lady of Glory, said to be the earliest church in the current Madras-Mylapore Diocese. About 100 metres west of this church, close to Ambedkar Nagar, is the first Dutch cemetery with about 22 protected tombs, dating back to 1631 to 1655 A.D. Closer to the market place is the impressive landmark Dutch cemetery with 76 tombs and mausoleums, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The beautifully carved tombstones, with inscriptions in the Dutch language, could have been carved in Holland and sent to India. The tombstones in both cemeteries tell us the story of the Dutch at Pulicat, from 1606 to 1690 A.D.

 Travel Guide:

For these places better to have your own vehicle. Because of lack of transport.

·         Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary: - From Chennai – Nellore highway travel via TADA and next Sullerpet toll plaza and further 15 kms a village called Dorevari Chatram. And Railway Station on left-hand side. Once you see the fly over take left and travel below flyover take right and immediate left u can see the welcome board. Cross the Railway track proceed further 5 to 6 kms to reach the sanctuary. By bus available to Sullerpet and Local train get down at Sullerpet or Naidupet. (Nelapattu is between Sullerpet and Naidupet) No stop at DOREVARI SATRAM railway station.

·         SHAR road SHRIHARI KOTA Andra State side PULICUT:–  Return to Sullerpet. Before entering on the left side of highway you can see the board way to KOTA i.e., Sriharikota so don’t confuse. Travel 15kms further till SHAR main gate if u wants to see the Space Center (entrance only). Along the side the beautiful backwater on either side of the road houses thousands of these migratory Birds, Fishermen busy in netting.  A beautiful scenery and enjoyable driving on the SHAR road.

·         Annamalicheri Fishing Hamlet the newly developing site for migratory birds. (Preferably After March)

Return to Sulerpet, Nellore highway and travel till Gummidipoondi.  Annamalicheri is 20 km East of Gummidipoondi on the Nellore Road via Devambedu village or by motor boat by travelling about 10 km northwest of the Pulicut boat jetty. A good laid road. Again a beautiful scenery road till Annamalicheri village. One bus come from CMBT to this village in morning but reaches here only by noon.

Vandalur Photo Shoot.

Recently I purchased the camera, Sony DSC-H50. I wanted to explore the camera and decide to visit Zoo, where I can shoot on different subjects. By afternoon reached the VANDALUR ZOO officially known as Arignar Anna Zoological Park. Entry fee 20/-head and Camera 25/- still.

This park is Environment friendly. Green Belt Area. No plastic foods allowed. Please keep eatables in paper covers and put in the dust bin only , kept across the park.

Located in Vandalur, a southern suburb 30 kilometers from the city of Chennai and 15 kilometers from Chennai Airport on GST Road. Founded in 1855, the Park was the first public zoo in India. It is recognized by the Central Zoo Authority of India.

Zoo is well connected by Local Train and buses. All buses from city plying towards Tambaram, Gudauvanchery, Chengalpet stops here. Just before the Guduvanchery. Local Train Beach to Chengalpet stops in Vandalur. After tambram 2 stops.

Early morning we wanted to see the Sunrise. If we were in Kodachadri it’s a different. Last night only I enquired with Manjanna and told to go till the end of the hill. We woke up early morning and started climbing small uphill beside the resort; at a stage we hit the boundary line with small fencing.  If we cross then only we can reach the top. While crossing I had the sense of shock. Yes it’s an electrical fence to keep the animals away.  After jumping the fence there was a beautiful world. Tall trees, small flowers. Path full of grass covered with fog and mountains playing with mist. Now from behind that end of the hill sun came up with dazzling shine slowly and kisses the fog filled earth and she begin to shrink and vapors away all the morning beauty.

We came down to kitchen to warm up us with a sip of coffee. But milk man comes only after 8am. By this time the city soles those are adjusted to bed coffee started peeping at kitchen doorstep.  Ashok offered me a hot decoction and told to have a taste. Wow its look tasty without milk. Sure we can practice in emergency.  On another end of kitchen Timmanna was busy preparing the cup idly coverd with palauv leafs made us not to step out side until had the breakfast.  By this time Manjanna came fresh and energetic to lead another busy day.  He has to arrange the vehicles for people going around, look after the breakfast, cleanliness of kuteerams (tents), Assuring the new guests,  hundreds of things on his head. But still he is cool and calm welcomes all with smiling face.

We are assured by him that we will get arrange with some team for outing.  At last by 8.30am heard that Jeep is ready and to have the breakfast quickly. After the delicious breakfast , we are charged to visit HIDLUMANE FALLS.

We six of us, driver, guide ready for fire, Jeep throwing the red dust hit the muddy, stone road and proceeds on Kollur road for 3 kms and took left turn inside the forest to cover another 4 kms. From there along the zigzag stone road cross the stream and reached the single house dead end Hidlumane.

From there it is a trekking towards the falls. Passing through the greenery paddy fields, sugar canes, started on the path along the small stream with caution by guide that leaches are waiting to suck your bloods and he was ready to face the situation with hand full of salt. The joyness becomes doubtful after inch by inch moving further. We hit the small fall and taught its real, guide told real is further 4 kms upstream showing the further road which starts shrinking and need to move further with utter caution. Only you will have the support of trees branches,Roots,  hard stones to hold and climb further on the skidding wet path. By this time I was bite by leaches and pull them away. But blood was still oozing.

At last putting back all these hurdles successfully saw the creativity of the nature. Amazing.  Hidlumane falls originates in Kodachadri hills and here it gush to hit the rocks below 70 -80 feet. The water is very chilled and it is just a stone throwing on you.  What ever the pain you have ill vanishes away to that force. Enjoyed the bath for some time but still not satisfied. We should thank the family who come along with us took the decision to climb up leaving there children down with guide.  By this time people started coming in. The effect is return path became horrible. I thought weather this is the path we climb.  It became so slippery that found very difficult to climb down. I fell at two or more places. At last reached the flat place where earlier we though it is the falls. There also we spend some time in water and by noon returned back.

Meals were ready to serve us. We were very much hungry.  Eat heavily and took a small walk to back water to say adieu.  The time came in the evening. After settling down heart fully thanked Manjanna for the memorable day in our life and assuring him we re visit again and again. Took the last bus 5pm to Shimoga and reached by 9.30pm. By 11pm boarded the Bangalore bus without any mood to return and continue the junk life in concrete forest.

The place I am taking to you is 40 kms from Sagar towards the Kodachadri hill range on Hosanagara – Kollur (Famous Sri Mookambika Devi Temple and Kodachadri hill, Tapobhoomi of Sri Aadi Shankaracharya) main road a small village called NITTUR and from there towards the Sharavathi River backwater a forest treat at Kalyani Chowka called Nisarga Viharadhama. Run by Mr. Manjanna with an ambitious and thousands of colorful dreams of exploring Shimoga Dist Tourist places, he has setup this Nisarga Dhama in his own land with support by many people..  Government of Karnataka has recognized the activities here and sanctioned two boats for sight seeing in Sharavathi Backwaters. Main Highlights:

 After having the delicious meals came to bus stand, we are told that next bus –last one at 4.30pm. But when enquired again the bus standing in first row was about to leave. It was already over crowded if we had miss this again to wait till 4.30 or 5pm. Conductor pushed us inside till the extreme end of bus and he was no way in mood to take off until every one gets suffocated. At last the bus left in full zoom till the destination Sampige Katte. Road ends here and all have to get down here and walk inside the big barge waiting for you to cross the river. All the waiting Cars, Jeep, two wheelers, Buses, people every one will be loaded and journey starts now by Barge for next 20 minutes to reach the other end. This is the Sharavathi River back water which after some 25 kms further crosses the Linganamakki Reservoir and creates the world famous JOG FALLS near mavina gundi.

From this end Nittur is another ½ hr journey which joins the Nagara – Kollur main road at Adagodi junction. From Shimoga coming on the straight road will cost you around 45   kms extra as there is no bridge near Sagar to cross the Sharavathi River.

The time we reach Nittur circle met Krishna murthy and went along with him to Nisarga Dhama. As my brother visited last year and being touch with all regularly, he know them very well. Manjanna with big smile welcomed us and assured a place to stay. Being a holiday it was over crowded with people beyond its limit. We got one tent to stay. After refreshing with a hot coffee we left for river side to view the evening beauty of the Sharavathi.

Nisarga Viharadhama – Kalyani Chowka-Nittur

The night dinner was awesome with forest jackfruit bajji and sambar, never will taste these food in cities. Then had little bit roaming around the Manjanna’s cottage and returned to our plastic tent. By this time Timmanna has provided the bed and bedspreads to cover us from the chillness.  Of course it doesn’t that much cold.

Suddenly around midnight heard people shouting, loud music, running here and there and spoiled the silence of nature and I woke up suddenly as someone hit the tent.  Till 2 am I couldn’t go back to bed.  I took chat with Manjanna and when asked to avoid these kinds of people he told he his helpless. All these students NO monsters are all from so called officials cum vip sons,   and if I took any bold step he know the consequences happen. I don’t know why these people come all the way to spoil the purity of nature. Just for boozing and enjoyment these are not the places. There were so many families with children are inside and silently suffered the pain. Over and above these nonsense continued till 2am. I suggested them not to feed these people beyond the limit. Close at maximum 11 or 11.30pm. Because all the staff has to getup early morning to face the early morning needs and Manjanna himself never rests until every one windoff.  Told him to take care and left for small nap……

It’s a solo journey this weekend towards Yelagiri Hills an untouched purity of nature. Just a day full off from the external world, No phone, SMS, tension etc, etc.

 Early Morning at Jolarpet Junction and on the way to Yelagiri.

Before I continue let me tell few words. 

• If you are planning to visit Yelagiri for fun, smoke and booze please don’t go and spoil the nature. (Please dont mind)
• It’s for Nature lovers, Trekkers and just for relax- relax- relax even being in a four corner you can feel.
• There is no big thing here; Government and district administration just started ABCD on the development part.
• Fruit farm at Nilavur nothing but few trees of Sitapala, Mango, Guava, Coffee plant and others, but can get many things for photography.
• Boat house and park at Atnavur is well maintained. You can take a good landscape photo in early morning and late evening. One full round you can come around the lake about a Kilometer.
• The best part of Yelagiri is NATURE PARK. Created by District administration Vellore. Just for this stay a night here. Beautiful garden, artificial falls, so many fountains (looks fantastic in night after they switch on the lights), A well maintained and placed aquarium, and not least the center stage of the park Music Fountain.

Yelagiri Hills

 Earlier with my CPC friends planned Yelagiri for three point agenda. At YMCA (Mangalam village) Bird Photography, Lake at Atnavur Macro photography and Government Fruits park at Nilavur macro photography on fruits and flowers. Due to time and transport not able to visit the Mangalam village.

 As alone the rule what I made. First I visited the owner of the hotel and told I had check in. He runs a small grocery shop in front of his hotel. There are many hotels in Athnavur but I felt this is the best, simple, neat and secured one. Opposite to Atnavur busstand. Able to accommodate single and in large group in a single room if needed.

Started the day by visiting the boathouse, on the way around a km a well-laid footpath full of flowers added more beauty with morning mist playing with sunrays here and there. On the roadside lots of various flowers in bushes, Varity and color full that’s nature creativity. Just I manage some of them with my camera.

 In the main road towards down hill take left opposite to Nature Park, walk till dead end. A garden and artificial lake is made to entertain you. Enjoyed the morning inside the park. Lake was already in love with sun, showing her happiness by reflecting his rays, swinging along the water, with the back drop mist filled mountains, Reddish muddy lands…. Wow what a beauty. While studying I used to sit some classes with the English optional students. Any way the intention was different. Just to mention a poem written by romantic poet William Wordsworth here…

I wandered lonely as a cloud

I was told that Bus was at 9am for Nilavur and hence returned from Boathouse to main road. I saw the Jackfruit tree on the roadside with hanging fruits at reachable height. My next point is Nilavur fruit farm. After getting onto the bus I didn’t ask conductor to drop at Fruit farm, I thought it is in Nilavur only. After passing a kilometer doubtfully asked him and to shock he told it already passed and dropped me in the middle. Ok any way weather was so pleasant and started upwards by walk enjoying the nature beauty. When I tried to capture the beauty, alas my camera suddenly caught in problem and all of a sudden I went blank. I tried all the options and felt very sad that I couldn’t capture the moments. At that time I remembered my VGA camera phone and decided to capture irrespective of clarity. Reached  Fruit house “Panchayath Fruit House” a big board is there. Its look likes a small farmhouse or a private property. After informing the caretaker he told this is still in development and you can see it. Inside a Polithine covered big room they are cultivating the various flowers and fruits. Just roamed around the mango, Guava, Sitapala trees, took snaps with VGA camera itself.

 Next in continuation of journey on the right hand side there you find a big billboard mentioning the way for Murugan Temple. It is on the small hillock with few steps around 50 or less. Lord Vinayaka, Subramanya shrines are located either side and a Navagraha also installed. You can have a good look of Atnavur from this small hillock. At this time rain started and stopped after few minutes. Even if it shines you can feel the chilliness.

 From there I came to room back it was just 12.00pm. Without the camera I feel I missed many things to capture. Because that was my purpose. By this time I had walked from Nilavur to Athnavur around 4 to 5 kms and felt stress and make my mind to have rest for a while and to get up by 1pm for lunch. Alas I wake up and the time was already 4pm. Under the warmness of blanket and chilled weather outside I was totally out of order. After freshing up tried the luck on camera, found it was working when flash fired. With some hope left out for finding lunch and at Hotel Yelagiri I was the last customer to order the lunch.

 After lunch I was back at Boathouse to have the feast of evening. The same story with different angle. This time heavy crowd thronged the park and totally mess. Rounded half the way of the tank and returned back to boat house jetty. Spent some time and by 5.30pm left for the final show at Nature Park.

 

As I said it is the only prime attraction as of now. After paying the entry fee he will give access card instead of ticket. You have to drop at the sliding door to enter in. It is well constructed and will be more beautiful if its litter free. Aquarium is awesome and attractive. After roaming around the park went to the ticket counter of music fountain. The show started by 7pm and last around 7.45pm with 5 to 6 songs and beautiful dance by colorful fountains reverberating to the songs and splashing the water around and springing highly along the tunes. Worth paying and visiting, a well made and hope they make more attractive in coming days.

 Oppsss at last the day came to end. Returned to room back, went outside and had the dinner. Raja told morning 5.15am the first bus. Had a nice sleep knowing that never will have this kind of sleep back in Chennai, without mood no other way getup at early morning and said adieu to Yelagiri.

                        Travel Information.

It is a 3hr journey by train from Chennai to Jolarpet. Fix the time according to your needs. Whole day lots of trains passes via Jolarpet.

 If planning for a weekend, previous night take train at 11.30 or next is at 11.55(may late always) at Jolarpet 3.30am. Just relax at waiting room. Morning 6am first bus to Yelagiri, this comes from Tirupattur. If you have own vehicle on the way to hilltop in between u can see a telescope house and enjoy the mountain and plain views. Bus reaches Athnavur by 7am and choose your destination as per your needs. If for trekking get down at Mangalam probably it may the last stop. Route No.253 and 254 Govt. Bus and Varalakshmi Pvt. Bus.

While returning form Yelagir early morning 5.15am first bus reaches Jolarpet junction by 6am. At 6.30 you can catch the Howrah express and will reach chennai by 9.30 – 45am.

From Chennai 102B Chennai – Thirupattur goes to Jolarpet from CMBT. You can get down at Ponneri junction also. That is the base of the hill.

We the CPC’ians had a gala day on the week end. Photo shoot planned at Tada Falls or the UBBALAMADUGU FALLS or Kone Falls. All the souls are charged fully and assembled in front of CMBT bus stand. By 5.30am One Jeep, two cars are ready for fire. Well you will be confused who are these CPC’ians? Let me tell in few words.

CHENNAI PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB shortly CPC, @ Yahoo Group’s was founded three years ago by Shiva Kumar a multi personality, young guy, Consultant in an IT company by profession and passion with Different skills. With Multiple persons supporting his hands today CPC has grown big. It’s a mix of all kinds and functions of people. From past One year CPCians are visited Gingi fort, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Vedanthangal, Dakshina chitra, etc., and conducted regular meetings, sessions. Well come to the point , this Tada trip was energized every one because after quite gap the long trip arranged. Grouping together the IT guys is quit difficult. Each having their own issues. In CPC we are having the people from HCL, Wipro, Sathyam, Cognizant, Ramco Systems even far from Cuddalore the MRF guys. The real thrilling started after we reached the Tada junction. As the sun has come up with shining informed us I will be bright today. Shiva’s Explorer Mahendra Classic gets ready for roaring. We removed the outer skeleton of the Jeep and made it open. There is a very big story about this Jeep, Brought as a scrap and spent around Three Lakhs to today’s condition, takes you where ever you go. Mahendra classic hit the road on the whooping speed touching 85-90 km on Speedo meter, sitting next to him I was holding my breath in hand. We had taken the real action when we saw mud water on road all the photographers on action; Mahendra splashed the reddish water in such a force that we couldn’t find the vehicle for a while.

Next action point is climbing the boulder road from road its about 20 feet deep gorge some construction activity going on that site. It’s just a big V climb people on the road side, near by all shocked to see the jeep going off the road and entering the deep tunnel and climbing up, below that’s a muddy with boulders, imagine you will see these action in film only. Sitting with him and having this experience imagine the sensation. The center stage of this real action is on return path clutch bolt and nut fell off due to the thunder with boulder below. If any one in Shiva’s place would be crying. Jeep standing on the other side of the road, in front 20feet deep gap jeep clutch out of order. Thriller Shiva just started the vehicle without any control on clutch, break brought back to the road. That’s the caliber of this jeep.

By 9.30 am we are at the base of the Tada forest. At the parking lot jeep went for a small surgery and our photographer became Mechanical Shiva. The team left him and other two and started the adventure towards the falls. After crossing the zig zag forest road, passed several streams suddenly we hit like a dead end, at this time we have stored lot of shots in camera Next level is up hill climbing, carefully stepping forward on the sharp and slippery rocks, stretching the entire body for aerobics at some level in-between main thing to safegarurd our cameras from hitting to rocks. On the while we took lot of Land scape and Macro shots, learnt from the seniors, we are having two giants in our CPC, Cannon-Prabhakar and Nikon-Sukumar experts in photography. At last all these climbing, jumping, falling all assembled on a rock for while and in meantime Shiva rectified the Jeep problem and joined us as a photographer. .

Next level ofthe climb is little bit tedious task and an uphill task. For trekkers its ok, but we the shooters?? Still we are not far behind any one we too climbed the  hill and finally reach the dead point the falls. It was really a false only. The water was not so force as expected. It was falling from a small cave and one person can sit and Enjoy at a time.

Had a great fun in water, had our packed foods, taken the wastes in a plastic cover till the down hills and disposed properly. While climbing down only found legs are ready for singing. A very happy thrilling Dawn to Dusk – Photography and Jeep-aerography ended with the good note and minds are already started planning for next shoot out.

Route:

From Chennai  Tada is around 95 Kms towards North.  From the CMBT go straight till the Puzal junction (Big Flyover junction) and take left go straight till you cross Gumdipondi and then Tada junction. There take the service road dont climb the flyover,  at this junction on left   which is Tada – Sri Kalahasthi road, further  around 10-12 kms. reach the village called Varadaiahpalem, then take left, you have to ask locals as there is no sign board to show the route. Tada falls is just 12km you will reach forest check post next to canal of Krishna River. From Chennai route no 114 goes till Varadaiahpalem. I didnt see any bus towards falls. Better to have your own transport.
