Last Sunday morning suddenly weather was very pleasant and provoked me to go out. We thought to have short ride from my house, planned to visit ancient Shiva temple near East Tambram which dates back to AD 954 period of Parantaka Chola II, once called Chola Chaturvedimangalam now MADAMBAKKAM. This is the temple called ‘Sri Dhenupureshwarar’ Shiva temple. This is maintained by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).

I wanted to know the route behind my home Medavakkam highway where it ends. So we started journey on the pit holes road zig zaging passing Pauzuthivakkam, Madipakkam Koot Road, Kilkattali bus stand, Pallavaram cross road (Pallavaram -OMR Road) Kovilambakkam , Nanmangalam Forest and ends at Medavakkam koot road at Velachary – East Tambaram High road. Together 8 Kms. After wards I took left turn on Tambram road and on that village road later i realised that i am on the wrong road. Any way i travelled further till Vengavasal and reached Madambakkam. Result, temple was closed and regular annadanam was on progress. Peeped inside the closed doors to have a look of Lord Shiva,. But it was darkness inside other than a lamp nothing visible. So round the prakaram, took the photos and spent some time on temple tank.
This beautiful temple rich in artichitecture, sculptures on the pillars. Due to the ages Temple tower doesn’t exist now. A monument about the history of the temple is erected in the entrance. Just walk around the temple, had darshan of lord and there is a beautiful temple tank adjacent to temple with good water.
Location: On the Velachary -Tambram high Road, towards Tambram after crossing Medavakkam, Nanmangalam forest range at Rajakilipakkam take left turn and drive for another 3 kms to reach MADAMBAKKAM.
Timings: 6am to 12pm and 5pm to 8.30pm

Hi,
It is said that the entrance (Raja Gopuram) concept evolved only during later Cholas, and was not during early Chola Periods. But am not sure.
Nice travelogue.
